Lato powdered milk is produced by Pearl Dairy Farm Limited and the deal, which is worth $740,000 (Shs 2.6bn) will go a long way in motivating other Ugandan farmers to position their products for export.

Hon. Tumwebaze applauded Coca-Cola Africa for its support of local industries and continued contribution to Uganda’s economy through its variety of products, support to local farmers and direct employment of thousands of Ugandans.

He also noted that besides improving the dairy value chain, export of this consignment is a positive testament of the ministry’s effort to promote the agro-industrialization objective of markets promotion and increased access to markets in accordance with government’s National Development Plan (NDP III). “I thank Zambian government inspectors who confirmed that Lato milk products are internationally certified.

They worked hand in hand with the Department of Animal Health at the Ministry and I am glad Uganda has now broken into the Southern Africa Market,” he said.

At the event, Bashir Kamulegeya, the Coca-Cola Mbarara Plant Manager, represented Melkamu Abebe, the Managing Director of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa.

He said when government initiated the Buy Uganda, Build Uganda policy, Coca-Cola was fully on board because it believes in adding value to the communities in which it operates. “We launched our Climb Up milk with the intention of refreshing Ugandans with a nutritious product but one with a unique difference – the ingredients and packaging would all be made in Uganda. We have brought samples here for you to see and taste for yourselves,” he said.

“We searched for a credible, reliable and trustworthy supplier of the key ingredient and went through a development process with Pearl Dairy Farms Limited to ascertain that they could meet the stringent quality standards of Coca-Cola globally. We are proud to note that they did! Having a Ugandan company certified as our supplier is something for all Ugandans to be proud of. After they had supplied us consistently over time, we found more opportunities and today they are supplying our sister company in Zambia,” he added.

Bhasker Kotecha, the Chairman of Pearl Dairy Farms Ltd, praised the efforts of various stakeholders such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, Fisheries (MAAIF) and the Dairy Development Authority (DDA) and the ministry’s Directorate of Animal Resources for facilitating the landmark breakthrough.

  • Lato Milk leads yoghurt market with five new flavours

Lato Milk leads yoghurt market with five new flavours

Pearl Dairy Farms Ltd the producer of Lato Milk has added five more flavours to their yoghurt range providing their consumers with a total of seven varieties to choose from.

The new yoghurt flavours which include apricot, peach, butterscotch, coconut and plain were officially launched by the State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatisation, Hon. Evelyn Anite on Saturday 3th/October 2020 at Pearl Diary premises in Mbarara town.

Speaking at the Launch, Hon. Anite applauded Pearl Diary for the quality of their products adding that the new additional Yoghurt flavours will give Ugandans a variety to choose from.

“Yoghurt is very healthy for children and adults. It has the good bacteria that keep our bodies strong and resistant to diseases. I have tested the new flavours and can testify they are very sweet and of high international quality. I urge Ugandans to buy Lato products, let us support our own local products,” she said.

The Minister further applauded the Processor for creating over 10,000 jobs for Ugandans and putting Uganda on the world map through exporting high quality products. She promised, through government, to continue supporting the investor through access to affordable credit, providing reliable and affordable electricity and access to local and regional market.

“I have been informed by the owners of Pearl Dairy that they want affordable credit for expansion, reliable electrify and access to market. Some of our regional market especially Kenya got issues last year but we are working hard to resolve those issues. I have also asked them to put in a request to Uganda Development Bank for the credit they need. We will also continue to provide reliable electricity at affordable rates like we have been doing for all our investors,” she noted.

The Pearl Diary Chairman, Mr. Bhasker Kotecha in his remarks said the company started producing Yoghurt six months back but because they was no market, they started with only two flavours of Vanilla and strawberry and are now adding more five flavours to give their consumers more choices.

Mr Kotecha further added that due to limited access to the Kenyan Market towards the end of 2019, and the Covid 19 Pandemic that broke out in Uganda in March, the company has largely slashed the amount of milk it buys from farmers which has largely affected farmers who have a lot of milk but don’t have market for it.

“In 2019, Pearl Diary paid Shs136b to farmers, this year, we have only paid Shs 32b as of September. This largely affects the farmers who have a lot of milk but have nowhere to sell it. As we also look to expand our markets to other countries, we ask government to work on the market access issues with in the EAC region because that is where our biggest market is,” he said.

Commenting on the new products, Mr. Devendra Seth, the Managing Director Pearl Dairy said the additional products reaffirm the company’s commitment to meet the changing needs of their customers and continuous effort to be innovative.

He said, ‘We have seen and appreciated how much our customers love the two yoghurt flavours we have had on the market to date.  However, we recently conducted research and found that they want greater variety to choose from and that is what we are providing, with these five new flavours.”

The new flavours will be added to the Vanilla and strawberry flavours and will be available in 400 gram and 200gram pouches and 500gram, 250gram, 150 gram and 100 gram cup sizes.

Mr. Seth said, “Our continuous commitment to excellence is what drives our offerings to meet the ever-evolving needs of the market. With the use of modern milk processing techniques, we offer high quality and innovative solutions through value-addition for our various products. Launching these additional flavours is another big step toward achieving our goals.”

He said research and development for the new flavours first started two years ago in New Zealand. New Zealand is a world leader in dairy processing. Mr. Seth said after carefully monitoring and testing a variety of recipes with technical assistance from a highly qualified consultant, the new flavours were put into production.

  • Uganda Dairy Processors in fear over declining EAC Market

Uganda Dairy Processors in fear over declining EAC Market

Dairy processors in the country are incurring major losses due to unfair terms slapped on the its products by East African Community (EAC) Member States.

With more than 2.4m liters of daily processing capacity, processors had to source an expanded market in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and other countries to be able to overcome lack of domestic demand for its production.

However, the unfriendly market forces from the neighboring countries continue to sink processors unto unprecedented losses, since its products’ biggest consumers have closed border (Rwanda) with Uganda while Tanzania has imposed a heavy import duty leaving milk processors and dairy farmers in heavy losses.

The dairy farmers are set to lose circa 300Bn and Uganda as a country is also likely lose more than 100 million U.S dollars in foreign exchange earnings.

Lack of market access automatically pushes the companies to scale down operations yet continues to face huge expenditures on taxes, salaries and other fixed overheads.

Collectively dairy processors had to let go of more than 2500 people during this COVID period due to lower capacity utilization driven by the ongoing Kenya blockade of Ugandan Dairy products.

East African Community Common Market Protocol is losing meaning because member countries are practicing unfair trade terms. Kenya blocking Ugandan milk by imposing volume restrictions through import permits, Rwanda closing its borders and Tanzania imposing duties on Ugandan dairy products is leading all milk processors to either substantially downsize or close.

Tanzania slapped a heavy import duty of Tshs 2,000 (Shs3,200) per litre of milk from Uganda in 2017 making business prohibitively expensive, and which is against the common market framework.

And as a result, many processors are compelled to scale down its operations.

And such predicaments threaten the future of milk production in Uganda.

Government of Uganda should therefore step up and engage partner states in EAC, and also rigorously open up international markets for milk producers in Uganda.
