NWSC assures Customers of Progress on Greater Kampala Water Extension Project and Timely Reinstatement of Affected Road Infrastructure

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is currently implementing the Rehabilitation, Restructuring, Rezoning and Extension of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Water Supply Network Project.

The project is at an advanced stage, as evidenced by the ongoing pipe-laying works in various parts of the GKMA. We wish to assure you that the project is being implemented for your benefit, with the long-term goal of improving the reliability of water supply.

The Katosi Water Treatment Plant has the capacity to produce 160 million litres of clean water per day, with potential for further expansion. However, due to limitations in the existing distribution network, we have only been able to utilise about half of this capacity. This project, therefore, is the critical missing link that will enable us to fully evacuate and distribute this water to water-stressed communities.

The project involves laying 69 kilometres of transmission mains, constructing new reservoirs at Kanyanya, Kabulengwa and Mutungo, building booster stations at Kungu and Kabulengwa, and upgrading the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system across major installations.

Upon completion, the project will significantly improve water supply reliability, reduce shortages and meet growing demand in Kira, Kasangati, Namugongo, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa, Gayaza, Matugga, Kawempe, Nansana, Wakiso and surrounding neighbourhoods. It will serve up to an additional one million people and support water supply through 2040.

Although the project is scheduled for completion in August 2027, some sections, such as the pipeline from Namugongo to Kasangati, are scheduled for earlier commissioning in January 2027, allowing customers in the targeted areas to benefit sooner.

NWSC fully understands and regrets the temporary inconvenience caused by excavations, particularly on roads and in residential areas. These works are necessary to install the pipelines that will deliver improved water services to you.

Reinstatement of Affected Road Infrastructure

NWSC confirms that the reinstatement of all affected areas to their original condition is included in the project scope of work and will commence this month.

NWSC teams and the contractor have been directed to ensure that roads, verges, walkways and other affected areas are properly and promptly restored. In several sections of gravel roads, reinstatement has already commenced following the completion and testing of the pipe-laying works.

Reinstatement will continue and be finalised as soon as the pipe-laying and related works in each section are completed.

NWSC and team are coordinating with the relevant municipal authorities and the Ministry of Works and Transport, while prioritising the acquisition of utility corridors wherever possible to minimise future damage.

Nevertheless, NWSC remains committed to minimising disruption and ensuring that roads and other affected areas in the communities where we are working are restored to their original condition or better.
