Uganda National Drug Authority blacklists 6 drugs

Latest has it that Uganda National Drug Authority (NDA)will withdraw licences for drug dealers who will be found selling any of the six drugs which they have recalled from the market. While addressing a news conference at the authority’s office in Kampala, Peter Ssali, the head of quality management at NDA, said that the blacklisted drugs are not fit for use and are actually dangerous to users’ health.

These blacklisted drugs include; Univital Multivitamin capsules made in India, Hydrapres injection manufactured in Spain, Agonal from India, Vitamin B complex injectable from China, Lyopox PPR imported from Morocco and Netvaicain Plain from India According to National Drug Authority officials, these drugs were recalled after a probe was sanctioned in response to complaints from pharmacists and patients. Although NDA is entrusted with powers to protect consumers from taking substandard drugs, it’s not clear how much of the banned drugs have been distributed on the Ugandan market.

Before drugs are sold on the market, NDA ensures that the ingredients are analysed to find out they meet the standards and specifications given by the manufacturers and importers. NDA has given the dealers not more than a month to have the drugs recalled. They will later be destroyed in Nakasongola. The authority has not yet established a plan on how to sensitize the public to desist from buying the same drugs from dealers who continue to sell the blacklisted drugs.
