Divine Mercy Academy: Transforming Lives and Expanding Opportunities in Fort Portal”

Introduction: Divine Mercy Academy, a private educational institution situated in Fort Portal, has undergone a remarkable transformation since its inception in 2009. This institution comprises a nursery, a primary school, and an outstanding secondary school. Over the years, the secondary school, known as Divine Mercy Secondary School (DMSS), has grown from humble beginnings to provide a bright future for numerous students.

Remarkable Journey: In 2009, DMSS began with just a single classroom block accommodating 23 students. Fast forward to 2020, and the school had expanded to accommodate 350 students, with around 100 residing on the campus in makeshift housing. During this time, the school faced the challenge of housing orphaned students year-round. DMSS has also excelled academically, boasting impressive test results, and providing a comprehensive Christian education experience.

Commitment to Growth: The leadership of Divine Mercy Academy felt a calling to further expand, ensuring that more students could access quality education and secure a promising future. In the past three years, they have been unwavering in their dedication to safe expansion, implementing several significant improvements:

  • A spacious girls’ dormitory now houses 490 students.
  • Half of a boys’ dormitory currently accommodates 360 students.
  • Enhanced campus safety, including the construction of a security wall, the establishment of a security officer station, transitioning the kitchen from wood to stone to reduce fire hazards, ensuring clean water sources, and placing fire extinguishers throughout the campus.
  • Improved scholarship offerings for students with promising learning potential.

As a result of these efforts, the school’s student capacity has increased to 850 students, supported by a dedicated staff of educators and a strong parent-volunteer committee. Remarkably, the school now provides partial or full scholarships to 18% of its student body.

An Appeal for Growth: “We are on the verge of completing our safe expansion journey. To finalize the construction of the boys’ dormitory and add the remaining safety features to our campus, we require an additional $95,000,” says Rev. Fr. Dr. Christopher Mukidi, the Director of Divine Mercy Schools. A generous donor has offered a 2:1 match gift, committing $64,000 if the school can raise $32,000. Your contribution can help achieve this goal, ensuring the completion of the boys’ dormitory and enhancing safety across the campus, as emphasized by Ms. Joanna Kasayuuni, Divine Mercy Schools Fundraising Associate.
