‘UBC Behind The Headlines’ premieres tonight, speaker maiden guest

Charles Odongtho is set to bounce back on television tonight with ‘UBC Behind The Headlines’ talk show on UBC.

The first guest of the show is the speaker of Parliament Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.

“Our maiden guest is the Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. We shall discuss with her the performance of Uganda’s 10th Parliament as well as the role of Parliament in post COVID-19 development,” UBC posted.

Hon. Margaret Muhanga and Hon. Abdu Katuntu are the panelists of the show. The show starts at 10pm.

Sheilah Gashumba tells TV presenters Fame won’t pay your bills but money will as she blasts Televisions for poor pay

Former television personality Sheilah Gashumba has blasted television stations for under paying Entertainment Presenters.

The ex -presenter who said she would be a farmer than a TV presenter had this to say, “ It’s time for everyone in the entertainment industry to value themselves. Fame won’t pay your bills but money will”.

She added that talent on TV in Uganda isn’t worth these tv stations. She advised presenters to know their worth adding this is the reason the entertainment industry is underrated because presenters don’t value themselves.

Sheilah tweets were mostly directed to her former employers NTV Uganda.

TVs accused of ignoring upcountry church services

National Televisions have been accused of ignoring religious services from upcountry churches. Concerned sources told www.showbizuganda.com that all televisions have concentrated on broadcasting services from Namirembe, Rubaga, All Saints and other churches around Kampala and a few from Mityana ignoring any services from upcountry churches.

This has been consistently done ever since the start of quarantine and lockdown amid COVID-19 global pandemic.

With lockdown and quarantine in place, large gatherings which includes church services have been banned for now until May leaving people to only services through televisions.

NBS television and NTV Uganda, Bukedde, UBC TV and other local stations are broadcasting only services within Kampala and partly Wakiso.

“These stations are only covering services in Kampala and yet us in upcountry we also need to have services broadcasted and we attend,” a one Kenneth said.

Cabinet approves UBC, Uganda Post Limited board members

Cabinet has approved 8 member committee for Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Board. This was on Monday May 6, 2019 at State House Entebbe.

The approved Members of the Board of Directors of Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) are for a three year term. The approved members are;

NARO partners with UBC for Smart Agricultural Practices Episodes

Today marks the start of a monumental journey in the history of NARO as they take deliberate steps to partner with the media fraternity to reach our clientele. This drive starts with the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), a pioneer station that has had an undisputed edge in the market with ability to reach our existing and potential clientele in 16 different languages across the country through its various platforms. It is through this partnership that NARO will permeate society and create awareness on modern agricultural practices translating into agricultural productivity and profitability.

At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations, it was noted that as a Regional Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Research in Sub-Saharan Africa, NARO is cognizant of the fact that for Uganda to attain Middle Income status, smart agricultural practices will have to be prioritized for adoption. This is what will move the 69% subsistence farmers to the cash economy.

In his remarks, the NARO Director General Dr. Ambrose Agona noted that over the years, NARO had generated over 1000 agricultural technologies and ground breaking agricultural research interventions that have stayed disasters like widespread famine resultant from emerging pests, diseases and climate change. Despite being hit by different epidemics like the Cassava Mosaic disease, Coffee Stock Borer, Banana Bacterial Wilt, the Fall Army worm to mention but a few, Ugandan farmers have always had enough grain and seed for self and even aid to other countries in some instances. He further explained that this was because at the heart of that experience, NARO scientists’ have ensured that there are stress tolerant seed and breed varieties available for different ecological zones in addition to recommendation of Pest and Disease management packages.

“NARO’s research on the Fall Army Worm has been recognized by Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) as one of only two case studies in Africa that have been successful in the management of the Fall Army Worm. These are some of the research interventions that we intend to showcase on this program on a weekly basis and we thank Uganda Broadcasting Corporation for agreeing to partner with us to reach the masses with development content.” Dr. Agona said.

It is worth noting that only last year 2017, NARO scientists concluded tests of 2 candidate tick vaccines for cattle in the region that could save the country billions of shillings in foreign exchange spent on importation of vaccines, once mass production is undertaken.

The Managing Director UBC, Mr. Winston Agaba welcomed the initiative by NARO and commended them for adhering to the President’s call to Ministries, Departments and Agencies to communicate developments and progress being undertaken by the government of Uganda.

He said, “NARO is the first agency to utilize the National Broadcaster as it ought to be utilized and I encourage other agencies to take advantage of the program revamp that is ongoing at the National Broadcaster. The weekly episodes will air starting May 13th, 2018 over the weekends when everyone is able to watch, learn and practice what they will have learnt.”

Frank Tumwebaze seeks for ICT support in China

The Minster for ICT and National Guidance Hon. Frank K Tumwebaze has continued his quest to put information and technology at a higher level in Uganda. During his recent visit to China, the minister rooted for a working partnership between CCTV and UBC.

After a visit to CCTV, the Minister agreed in principle with CCTV management that the two state national broadcasters should corporate and learn from each other. For UBC, Frank said it’s a major step in an effort to rebuild and revamp it.

CCTV will accord UBC staff an opportunity to learn new modern skills in broadcasting, content production and management and use of new modern digital equipment.

An official Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) will follow through our countries’ formal diplomatic channels.

The minister also lobbied for more working partnership between the two states in other ICT sectors.

Below is the Minister’s full statement;

“I have concluded my one week working visit to China. Together with my delegation, we attended the world Internet conference in Wuhzen province and good discussions on ensuring safety and sustainability of the cyberspace were held. The future of the Internet, its equitable access and the end of its monopoly by the big powers dominated the discussions.

Famous personalities like ALI BABA spoke at the conference that was attended by world ICT leaders and Presidents of ICT multinational firms. After the conference, my delegation and I visited the CCTV headquarters in Beijing. I thank our Embassy in Beijing -China for organising this meeting. I discussed with the management of CCTV (China’s national broadcaster) possible areas of mutual cooperation and partnership with UBC. We agreed in principle that our two state national broadcasters should corporate and learn from each other.

Frank Tumwebaze appoints committee of professionals to revamp UBC

The Minister for ICT and National Guidance Hon Frank Tumwebaze on Monday appointed a review committee of professionals in various disciplines that will look into the operations of the carious national broadcaster UBC, its TV and radio channels. Below is his statement;

Colleagues, Staff of the Ministry and agencies, Members of the Press, Our Special guests today, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen. This will be a short ceremony and its objective is to commission a review committee of professionals in various disciplines that will look into the operations of the national broadcaster (UBC),its TV and radio channels.

UBC has great potential to shine both within the country and on the airwaves worldwide. It is my intention therefore to have a strong and well managed national broadcaster able to cover the whole country, fully close the gap left by the private players and help to tell a true story about Uganda’s rich heritage.

We believe we have the infrastructure, we have the people, we have the ideas and we have the drive to make this happen, as Ugandans. But before we embark on all these ambitious initiatives, it is important to carry out a complete scan on the institution, so that the policies made by Cabinet as well as decisions made by the Board and the staff of UBC are well-informed.

It is for this reason that I am privileged today to commission a team of experts who have proven themselves in different fields, and task them to spend some time and effort doing a Review and Assessment of UBC and its respective channels. This Review will run for at least one month and at most two months.

The Committee will liaise very closely with the Board of UBC and with the Ministry.

I am happy to unveil them to you this morning, as follows:

Dr. Peter G. Mwesige: The Committee will be chaired by Dr. Peter G. Mwesige, who is a well-known media professional with many years’ experience, and who champions media excellence and professionalism not only in Uganda but across the continent. Dr. Mwesige is absent today because of some prior engagement that he must conclude in order to fully dedicate time to this Committee for the next one month.

Ms. Peace Piwang: Peace, is a Human Resource professional with outstanding experience in identifying and managing talent, and leading transformation initiatives in large organisations. Her skills at managerial competencies, building efficient teams and empowering human resource assets have been well-noted in various organisations and will be useful at UBC.

Mr. Adolf Mbaine: Adolf, is a seasoned, professional journalist with a highly respected track record, a media manager of senior standing, as well as an Academician. He has been at the helm of producing some of the best journalists we have in Uganda today and devotes a lot of time to building onto the body of knowledge in professional journalism.

Mr. Andrew Kibaya: Andrew, is an advocate of the high court with solid experience in corporate and commercial law, and a good grounding in banking and finance. He is globally ranked as a distinguished lawyer in Uganda and recognised by the International Finance Law Review and Chambers Global.

Mr. Peter Okello Jabwelli: Peter Okello, is a media and communications professional with many years’ experience working with the media in Uganda. He has also worked at senior management levels with the Government of Uganda and is currently on the Uganda Media Council as a professional in the field.

Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo: Odrek, is a senior journalist, a public relations and communications professional, as well as a farmer and entrepreneur. Odrek has many years’ experience as a journalist, and also as a public relations manager and consultant. As an entrepreneur he has successfully applied himself at a number of initiatives that have changed Uganda’s business landscape significantly. He has passion for harnessing and adding value to our own domestic resources and gradually growing big. He is a strong critique of government’s tax policy mainly on agri-busineses.

Eng. Kato Bitarabeho: Eng. Kato, is an engineering and ICT professional, as well as an entrepreneur. His experience over the last fifteen years has had him deliver successful projects in Uganda, Gabon, the Congo and Zambia. He has broad experience in Television and Radio Broadcast infrastructure, as well as Telecommunications and Wireless systems.

The Committee will also be given additional support by technical officers that we will identify.

The terms of reference of the committee will include:

An Organisational Capacity Assessment
Studying the Quality of Content and Services of all UBC channels
Assessing the innovative capacity of UBC
Benchmarking ways on how Governments support national broadcasters.
