During the visit, the District Governor also engaged in a Peace and Conflict resolution dialogue with Ntinda women market vendors, beneficiaries of the Rotary programs, in honor of the Peace and Conflict Resolution/Prevention month.

The climax of the event included a fellowship ceremony, where new inductees and Paul Harris Fellows (PHFs) were pinned, recognizing their commitment to Rotary’s mission.

Today, the British High Commission in Kampala hosted the Uganda–UK Health Summit, bringing together senior policymakers, health professionals, diaspora leaders, and development partners to celebrate and strengthen the enduring health partnerships between Uganda and the United Kingdom. The event was graced by key dignitaries, including the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr Diana Uganda’s High Commissioner to the UK, HE Nimisha Madhvani and the VC Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Prof. Pauline Byakika. The summit featured case studies from different medical specialties, nursing, oncology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), underscoring the tangible outcomes of joint efforts.

In her opening remarks, the British High Commissioner to Uganda H.E Lisa Chesney MBE highlighted the life-saving impact of collaborative programmes like the MRC/LSTHM+UVRI partnership and the establishment of Mildmay Hospital Uganda as joint efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in Uganda, the EMPOWER programme which aims to equip health workers to respond to maternal and neonatal emergencies, and the University of Liverpool’s work with the Infectious Diseases Institute on maternal sepsis. She also praised the introduction of cardiac MRI technology through Barts NHS Trust and the Uganda Heart Institute, and the innovative low-pressure oxygen systems developed by FreO2 that have helped reduce neonatal deaths at Kiryandongo Hospital.

During her remarks, the Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine said ‘Uganda is still the leader in epidemics control. We are grateful that the support we get from the UK is in line with Uganda’s strategic plan and national development plan. Our focus is now on integration – where we have one plan and one budget and we are thankful that the UK supports Uganda’s priorities. We are grateful for this summit since it strengthens ties and demonstrates mutual reciprocation. We particularly want to thank the UK for the Scale programme which aims to train a number of specialists.
She added ‘Today’s Summit will be a springboard for critical areas to be addressed including – the curriculum of different specialists, health innovations, talent registry. We also want to work with the diaspora to develop an HR policy that wards off bureaucratic processes so that more skilled workers come back to Uganda to contribute to our healthcare ambitions. We are keen to work with the UK to learn best practices and forge strategic collaborations’
Uganda’s Ambassador to the UK, HE Nimisha Madhvani praised the historical relationship between both countries said ‘It’s wonderful to be here in Uganda with all of you. This should now be an annual event in Uganda. Today, demonstrates the partnership and commitment of the Government of Uganda and United Kingdom especially for medical research and medical progress for our people in Uganda. This includes budget support financing. Together we have achieved capacity building – expanding training and developing health infrastructure, thereby improving health outcomes for Uganda, knowledge sharing – facilitating the exchange of expertise, innovative approaches and best practices to enrich both our systems, joint research – promoting collaborative research that advances medical science and benefits communities in both nations. I reconfirm Uganda’s commitment to working closely with the UK to advance healthcare’.
Ms. Margaret Caffrey, the Technical Director at the Global Health Partnerships (GHP) emphasized “What makes these partnerships powerful is the people behind them – Ugandan and UK health workers, patients and diaspora communities working side by side to improve care. This is collaboration at its best.”
As the summit concluded, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening partnerships, scaling successful models, and ensuring inclusive, sustainable health impact for both nations.
Kampala: The Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) yesterday held its official handover ceremony at Protea Hotel, marking a new chapter in the leadership of Uganda’s premier PR body. The outgoing Governing Council, led by President Tina Wamala, officially handed over the reins to the incoming Council headed by Irene Nakasiita, Director of Communications and Resource Mobilization at the Uganda Red Cross Society.

The event was graced by Hon. George William Nyombi, Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission, and featured an inspiring keynote address by renowned Digital communications expert Patrick Adengo.
Over the past two years, the outgoing Council under Tina Wamala’s leadership has delivered remarkable achievements that have strengthened PRAU’s financial stability, strategic relevance, and visibility within the profession.

The team set up effective governance structures and introduced alternative payment options for the association such as Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS), launching FlexiPay, securing strategic partnerships with industry leaders, and expanding membership across individual, student, SME, and corporate categories.

Incoming President Irene Nakasiita shared her vision for the next term:
“I step into this role with deep appreciation for what has been built and a renewed sense of purpose. Together with the new Governing Council, we will focus on growing PRAU’s impact, fostering continuous professional development, and advancing the PRAU Bill in Parliament to solidify the PR profession in Uganda.”
During her tenure, Tina also led the revival of the PRAU Excellence Awards, hosted two successful national PR symposiums, launched the PRAU Student Mentorship Program, and oversaw Uganda’s hosting of the 2nd East Africa Public Relations Week.

Kampala: The Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) proudly celebrated the graduation of Cohorts 1 and 2 of its Mentorship Programme at a prestigious ceremony held at Makerere Business School. This milestone marks a significant step in PRAU’s mission to nurture the next generation of Public Relations professionals in Uganda.
The event, which was part of a broader Student Symposium on Public Relations and Communications, brought together industry leaders, mentors, mentees, and distinguished guests to reflect on the success of the programme and discuss the future of PR in Uganda.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Tina Wamala, President of PRAU, commended the mentees for their dedication and applauded the mentors for their unwavering commitment to shaping future PR professionals.
“This occasion marks not just the completion of a journey but the beginning of a promising future for the next generation of PR professionals in Uganda,” Wamala stated. “The PRAU Mentorship Programme was designed to bridge the gap between academia and the professional world, ensuring that our mentees gain practical insights, industry exposure, and invaluable guidance from seasoned PR experts.”
The PRAU Mentorship Programme was launched to provide students and young professionals with real-world exposure, hands-on experience, and mentorship from some of Uganda’s leading PR practitioners. Over the course of the programme, mentees engaged in one-on-one mentorship, gained insights into industry best practices, and participated in practical learning experiences.
Guest speakers at the graduation were Ms. Josephine Omunyidde Zhane, Founder, Engender Girls’ Mentorship Programme and Mr. Godfrey Kuteesa – Director, Boys Mentorship. Both speakers emphasized the need for mentees to continuously seek knowledge, expand their networks, build strong character, and cultivate a positive attitude—key factors that contribute to long-term success. Their words served as a powerful reminder that mentorship is not just a phase but an ongoing journey of learning and self-improvement.
Feedback from the graduates highlighted the immense impact of the program. Mentees expressed their gratitude for the knowledge gained and the professional networks they have built. One participant noted, “This initiative has given me a real feel of how PR operates in the real world, and I am confident it will guide me throughout my career.”
However, mentees also suggested improvements, such as extending the duration of the program, increasing the number of mentees, and incorporating more structured physical and virtual group discussions with mentors. PRAU has taken this feedback positively and is committed to refining future mentorship initiatives.
The mentorship programme’s success was made possible through the dedication of PR professionals who volunteered their time and resources to support young talents. Mentors not only shared their expertise but also covered costs for mentees’ professional development, further demonstrating their commitment to the growth of the industry.
As PRAU looks ahead, the association remains committed to expanding its mentorship initiatives, fostering professionalism, and strengthening Uganda’s PR landscape. Wamala urged industry players to continue investing in young professionals, stating, “PR is a dynamic and evolving field. To remain relevant, we must continuously invest in mentorship and knowledge-sharing to elevate our profession.”

The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, 10th November 2023, marking the 7th Edition of the awards since their inception. The event will be a culmination of the East African Public Relations Week, scheduled from 6th to 10th November 2023, at the Jinja Nile Resort.
Period of Evaluation:
Entries for the 2022/2023 PRAU Excellence Awards will consider PR work and campaigns executed between 1st January 2022 and 30th September 2023. This time frame accounts for the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021, which significantly affected public relations activities. Kampala, Uganda: The UK government and Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS) have commissioned a three storeyed building at PEAS Onwards and Upwards secondary school in Buloba. This is the first ever storeyed building in PEAS’ networks in Uganda and Zambia.
Ground was broken for the structure by UK Minister Vicky Ford, during a visit to Uganda in January.The structure provides one science laboratory, office space and six classrooms creating additional learning spaces.
The science laboratory will strengthen delivery of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in the PEAS Network, challenging the belief that disadvantaged learners cannot excel in STEM subjects.
The dormitory spaces will address barriers that girls and boys in less advantaged communities face to access secondary education and transition into post-secondary education.
In the last 7 years the UK has provided funding to support PEAS in expanding access to affordable quality secondary education. PEAS’ network is now consists of 30 secondary schools in Uganda, educating over 14,000 students in 24 districts. In addition, PEAS provides direct support to 200 Government-run schools, helping them to improve the quality of their education and so strengthening the education system more broadly.
Speaking about this, Deputy Development Director of the British High Commission Kampala, Matthew Little said: ‘The UK is committed to supporting more children in Uganda to receive a quality education. For individuals, it is a pathway to more options and freedom in later life; for Uganda, it is a pathway to increased growth and prosperity. These benefits should be available for everyone, and we are proud that our partnership with PEAS is giving opportunities to thousands of children who might otherwise be left out.’
PEAS is a not-for-profit organisation, running schools in less advantaged communities with few or no affordable schools providing quality secondary education. With many secondary schools in Uganda significantly increasing fees post COVID-19 and some failing to re-open, PEAS have protected access to secondary education for learners that would have otherwise dropped out of school as a result of the increased fees; numbers of learners at PEAS schools are now higher than before COVID-19.
Henry Senkasi, Country Director of PEAS added ‘This partnership has created 1,020 new learning spaces, 2 science laboratories and 660 boarding spaces in eight 8 PEAS schools across the PEAS Network in Uganda. We couldn’t be more thankful to the UK for this commitment and long standing partnership and the investment they are making to Ugandan students’ lives and indirectly to their future, ensuring they reach their full potential to become productive future citizens’.
The schools supported by the UK include during this round of infrastructure support; PEAS Kuc Kigen in Lamwo; PEAS Toroma in Katakwi; PEAS Mukongoro and PEAS Nyero in Kumi; Onwards & Upwards in Wakiso, PEAS Kityerera in Mayuge; PEAS Kichwamba and PEAS Kazingo in Kabarole.
The launch brings together district education partners, local government, community representation/ parents and PEAS student representation.
Kampala;On 25th August 2022 British High Commissioner to Uganda Kate Airey OBE hosted the 2022/2023 Ugandan Chevening scholars and Commonwealth scholars to congratulate them and bid them farewell before they embark on their masters or PHD studies in the UK.
Chevening is the UK government’s international scholarship scheme and has been running since 1983. It offers a fully funded one year master’s degree in any field at top class UK Universities and is aimed at developing global leaders. Since its inception Uganda has produced over 290 Chevening beneficiaries and has an active Alumni association.

Commonwealth Scholarships offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development. The CSC offers Masters’, PHDs and Fellowships and aims to promote equity and inclusion, reward merit, and deliver widespread access, especially to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
To date, over 35,000 people have taken up a Commonwealth Scholarship since the first group of 175 Scholars arrived in the UK in 1960. During those six decades, the scheme has constantly developed, adapting to the very different world of a 56-nation Commonwealth of today. Uganda boosts of a portfolio of over 1700 beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme.
This year’s Chevening and Commonwealth send-off event was an opportunity for the scholars to interact with each other, meet key stakeholders from the Ministry of Education as well as staff members of the British High Commission.

Kampala: Nigel Topping, the United Kingdom’s High Level Climate Change Champion is in Uganda for a one day visit.
His visit signals the UK’s commitment to carry forward the actions from COP26 as we countdown to COP27.
His visit included a meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda Cities and Infrastructure Growth, Ugandan climate youth activists and CEO’s from major commercial banks to understand the climate situation in Uganda.
The negative impacts of climate change in Uganda are clear, with irregular weather and increased rains causing significant loss of life and livelihoods dependent on natural capital.

The UK has partnered with Uganda to develop climate resilient technologies, harnessing expertise and innovation in order to find solutions that ensure Uganda is adapting for the future.
For example, the WISER programme led by the UK is supporting better access to climate and weather information services aimed to support 198,000 farmers to reduce their vulnerability to climatic hazards.
Following COP26 held in November 2021 in Glasgow in the UK, and the ambitions that were set out by various countries, Topping’s visit emphasises the UK’s resolve to tackle climate change and to continue to engage with countries to find solutions to the climate crisis. As highlighted at COP26, mobilising finance is key to delivering our climate goals. The UK is focused on supporting Uganda in accessing both private and public finance in order to realise opportunities for green growth and create a resilient and adaptive environment for the growing population to thrive.

Topping met representatives from the Ministry of Water and Environment to understand Uganda’s progress on the nationally determined contributions (NDC’s) and its own COP26’s commitments.
He also met the Uganda Cities and Infrastructure Growth to discuss the status of the energy sector and infrastructure development, a project supported by the UK Government. The highlight of his visit was a panel discussion with climate youth activists on what more needs to be done to tackle climate change globally and in Uganda.
Speaking about his visit, Nigel Topping said:
‘I am excited about Uganda’s focus on climate and environment issues and also encouraged by the stakeholders I have met today who have shared interventions that I believe will be key to tackling climate change in Uganda. The UK remains a strong ally of Uganda in the fight against climate change’.
