‘My journey to contesting for Bukoto County West MP seat’- Olivia Mugabe

In February 2016, i made up my mind to run for Member of Parliament Office come 2021. I came to this decision after witnessing various leaders that had assumed office during the 2016 polls.

I sat back and thought to self that we could do better as the YOUTH! I wasn’t very impressed and contented with the quality of leadership VS service delivery back home in Bukoto West CONSTITUENCY.
I set out to start on my political journey. (How it all started is a story for another day)

After several consultations and meetings, only about 20% of the people i talked to gave me a go ahead. The main reason for their disapproval was; “OLIVIA YOU’RE STILL YOUNG, GIVE YOURSELF ANOTHER 10-15 YEARS!”

This did not stop me from pursuing my dream because i was determined from the get-go! I chose to focus on that 20% that had given me a green light.

What point am i driving home….?

To my fellow youth, the more we wait for our dear elders / grandparents to take charge of our future the more it will get worse. We have to get out of our comfort zones, throw away this irresponsibility and take part in decision making processes. That space will not be granted to us at goodwill, we have to fight for it.
It is absurd that most of our elders say we have no business joining politics now yet the majority commenced their respective political journeys in their 20s and early 30s… (The irony 🙄)
They say we are too young to run big offices but forget we are more learned and exposed than they were when they took charge!
Our elders have done their part, we really do thank them and request they sit back and offer guidance and wise counsel to the youth. They should not fight us!
As we celebrate The Youth Day today, i encourage my fellows to get up and take charge of their destiny. Empower ourselves in any way possible, invest in materials that will enhance our thinking capacity and change our mindset. Develop the culture of reading.
Like Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see.”

    Happy Youth Day 2020.

  • Mental Health wellness during COVID-19 lockdown

Mental Health wellness during COVID-19 lockdown

    By Olivia Mugabe

    Hello Friends and Well-wishers,

It’s been a while! I know times are hard everywhere but with all efforts combined, we shall win this fight.
As we all anticipate, lockdown might end soon here in Uganda, but what is that one thing that you have done or rediscovered with in you? Mine has been WRITING. As a student, I used to do lots of writing on different topics.
    Please spare a few minutes and read my small article on one of the most important aspects of life during this period;

We are in the midst of one of most difficult periods in Ugandan history. A lot of people’s lives have been turned upside down by the psychological and economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

To add salt to the injury, we are told by government to stay confined to our homes for another 21 days in a bid to stop further infections! The lockdown is a necessary evil and I thank the President, his cabinet and all medical professionals on the frontline for all they are doing to curb this very deadly infection.

But given the current situation, how well have we prepared to keep surviving emotionally? With all the stress factors around us, how ready are we to cope and keep our sanity?
Talk of depression due to lack of some basic needs, anxiety from the family breadwinner, emotional blackmail by abusive partners, getting overwhelmed by children asking this and that, worry and fear from the constantly changing media alerts regarding the spread of the virus and so on and so forth!

If we don’t find viable solutions to the above, I’m worried we may be in for an ugly mental affair during and after the lockdown.

    Sitting with my little notebook and pen, this is what I think we can practice to keep mentally sane now and after this not so appeasing period;
I know we all didn’t see this coming! But why not change our perspective towards the situation. Let’s look at it as a unique and different time, not necessarily bad. Our minds consume what we feed them on, so let’s be try and be positive.

    – Routine! Create a daily route of those things that you love and enjoy to do. For even those activities you’ve always wanted but failed because of lack of time. Work on things you love and you’ll be amazed at how days run by.

    – Exposure to media. Choose what news to listen to, watch or browse. Not all that’s put out in the media is good for our mental health. See, it’s said that sender of and form of information is not responsible for how the receiver perceives it. Take care of your peace of mind!

    – Remember you’re not in this alone. Stay connected to those people that cheer you up. We are at a point where we all need each other. Laugh, tell jokes, reminisce over the good times, make fun of the existing; it’s never that serious after all.

    – Give, give and give to others! Do this generously. Sit and ask yourself if there’s any way you can be of help to someone in need during this crisis. I grew up knowing that giving not only benefits the receiver but most importantly it nourishes the soul of the giver.
    God loves a cheerful giver.

-Parents where are you? Do you now have more love and respect for your children’s teachers and school care givers or not? This here is my most interesting segment. I’m almost running head over heels because of these little humans. But now is when they need you the most. Their mental wellbeing depends on you! Give them extra attention, try as much to answer most of their questions, give them an assurance that life will go back to normal, engage them in your home’s daily plans etc. Most importantly, allow them to express their feelings about each and everything.

-Above it all, pray, pray, and pray! Churches, mosques and temples were all locked at the start of the crisis. Engage in one on one session with your God. Cry out to Him. You have all the time in the world. Recite your mantras. I believe this is the best therapy for your mental wellbeing.

“Don’t forget to stay safe, together we shall defeat COVID-19.”

Olivia Mugabe on why she wants Bukoto West Parliamentary seat

Olivia Mugabe earlier this week announced her intentions to contest for the post of Member of Parliament (MP) for Bukoto West constituency in Lwengo district.
Her announcement has come as a surprise to many because they didn’t see as a person who was about to go into politics.

Olivia doesn’t have any political background but her dream to contest started during 2016 elections.
Mugabe told this website that after casting her vote in 2016, her thought to contest came into her mind.

“After casting my vote, i was like we can do this right because like someone who has grown up in this area have known same people representing us but nothing has changed and i was like people we can change this,” Olivia Mugabe said.
The 30-year-old, born and raised in Kyazanga will be the first woman to contest for this position in Bukoto West constituency having been previously done only by men.
“I want to show that it is possible for a woman to also become an MP for a constituency not only for the district like many think,” she said.
Part of her manifesto, Olivia wants to tackle the problem of early child marriages which is very common in the constituency.
“I want to make sure i emphasis education to eliminate early child marriages caused mostly by school dropouts. This issue is affecting young generation in the constituency and once i am elected, i want to have it sorted,” she said.
Also on her manifesto, Mugabe wants to work on health care in Bukoto West. She said in the two sub countries in the constituency, there is only one ultrasound scan machine and this is not enough for pregnant mothers in the area.
“There is a need for monitoring of pregnant mothers. Mothers here carry pregnancy for nine months without checking their statuses which is not good because these days we have different diseases that can affect unborn babies. Some of these when detected early can be avoided and this can only be done when there is functioning health care system which i intend to work on,” Olivia said.

She has also highlighted girl child issue as one of her priorities.  “When these girls get pregnant, they drop out of school which shouldn’t be the case. These girls should be helped and told that there is life after giving birth. You can continue and finish your studies even after giving birth. I am a living example, I gave birth before finishing my school but i went back and finished and here i am,” Olivia said.
