Ngule to reward Masaza Cup top scorer

Ngule Lager, the official beer of the Buganda Kingdom has set aside a cash prize of UGX 1 million shillings that will go to the Masaza Cup tournament’s golden boot winner. The 1st and 2nd runners up will be rewarded with UGX 300,000 and UGX 200,000 respectively by the Uganda Breweries beer.

The Masaza Cup is an annual tournament that has been played since 2004 and usually features nineteen teams from 19 different Buganda Kingdom counties. The teams that qualified for the quarter finals are: Busiro, Buddu, Gomba, Bugerere, Mawokota, Kooki, Singo and Bulemezi. Quarter finals will kick off on 23rd July 2017 with the 1st leg kicking off at 4pm and the 2nd leg at 3 pm.

This reward is also in continuation with the celebrations in honor of The Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Mutebi’s 24th coronation anniversary on 31st July.  Just last month, the beer announced a price reduction to the Kingdom’s beer to UGX1,500 in commemoration of the celebrations.

Catherine Twesigye, the Brand Manager Ngule speaking at Bulange during the ceremony said that there was no brand best placed to reward exceptional talent than Ngule. “Ngule, loosely translated means Crown and that is why we have chosen to crown the best scorer of the tournament” she said.  “This prize has been named “Engule Y’o Mutebi Asinga”

Ngule, which was launched in January 2016, is the official kingdom beer produced under a partnership between Uganda Breweries and the Buganda Kingdom. This partnership consists of a revenue sharing agreement that is beneficial to both entities.

Sulaiman Sejjengo, the Chairman Masaza cup organizing committee said the Masaza cup, which is now in its quarter finals, has been very enjoyable but is increasingly becoming tense towards the finals.

He noted that during the previous games, fans have been invading the fields in big numbers and going forward any field without a perimeter fence will not be permitted to host any match.

Ngule takes over as official drink for Buganda traditional functions

The Buganda Kingdom official beer, Ngule, will be at every Buganda traditional function, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owekitiibwa Charles Peter Mayiga, has said.

The Prime Minister was presiding over the swearing-in ceremony of the new Executive of the Association of Abo’ogezi B’emikolo at Bulange, Mengo, on Tuesday 14, 2016.

The Abo’ogezi Association is a body that brings together all Buganda Kingdom cultural events spokesmen.

Ngule, which was launched in January 2016, is a kingdom beer produced by Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) for Majestic Brands – the investment arm of the Buganda Kingdom.

“As our ambassadors, when the bako (in-laws) are asked to bring ekita at kwanjula, I task you to make sure they bring Ngule,” said Mayiga.

“We want to move our people away from consuming illicit brew which is potentially harmful to their health,” he added.

At the event, attended by over 500 Aboogezi, Mr Mayiga emphasized the need to keep the tradition but also modernize it so that the consumers of the brew brought to events are both safe and healthy.

Noah Ssenfuma, a representative of the Aboogezi said Ngule is a beer for celebratory occasions that should be present at every festival. He urged his fellow Boogezi to make sure that the brand is present at all functions they cover and recognized the fact that Ngule is the official kingdom beer.

“On a recent visit to the Uganda Breweries Limited plant in Luzira, I was taken through the production and bottling process our beer goes through. This beer is hygienically produced and is brewed to international standards, just like all other UBL beer brands,” Mayiga said.

Owek. Mayiga further urged farmers within the kingdom to grow cassava and supply it to UBL. Ngule is brewed from cassava, most of which is exclusively sourced from within the Buganda Kingdom.

“This is also part of the Kabaka’s 5 year strategic plan to get the people of Buganda out of poverty. This beer is another way in which we aim to boost household incomes within the kingdom,” Mayiga said.

He added that the kingdom intends to re-invest the monies earned from Ngule into key areas in the kingdom such as health, education and sanitation.

The Katikkiro also urged them to continue supporting other kingdom initiatives and brands. He highlighted the tree planting initiative which has been widely embraced by the kingdom’s subjects. It is now the norm to carry tree seedlings as part of the gifts to kwanjulas. This is part of the Buganda Kingdom’s efforts towards conserving the environment.

The announcement was made to members of the press following a guided tour of the Uganda Breweries production plant by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga and Nyimpini Mabunda, Managing Director – UBL.

“Having toured the home of Ngule, I am very impressed with the standards and quality assurance measures that have been put in place to ensure that we have a beer that can ably compete on the market. This beer is affordably priced to get more Ugandans to consume formal beer and move them away from illegitimate, poor quality and potentially hazardous alcohol,” said the Katikkiro.

Nyimpini announced that the beer has been an overwhelming success from introduction to market and had exceeded its planned forecast for the launch period. He also mentioned that this success had led to initial production issues due to overwhelming demand, but that the beer was now back in stock. He encouraged trade and consumers to promptly return empties as they purchase Ngule, to allow for swift replenishment.

“Fundamentally, we have a great liquid. Our brewers have developed a great quality and delicious beer that everyone loves. This has been efficiently produced at a very affordable price. It is the lowest priced beer on the market today, thanks to an offer to the consumer from The Buganda Kingdom and Uganda Breweries Ltd. This offer however, is due to end soon and we shall take up the price slightly to better allow us cover the costs of production. We are delivering top notch quality to the consumers at a great price and we intend to be consistent in that respect.”

The beer is made from local ingredients; cassava and sorghum, which are exclusively sourced from the kingdom.

Owekitiibwa Charles Peter Mayiga hailed the farmers within Buganda for responding to the call to grow cassava in order to benefit financially from Ngule. “Buganda Kingdom has a 5 year strategic plan that focuses on leveraging all the kingdom’s resources to lift His Majesty’s people out of poverty. I thank those farmers who heeded our call at the launch to grow cassava. They are already reaping benefits from Ngule. We foresee Ngule being an encouragement to the agriculture sector to become a part of the positive cycle of growth. This will also lead to strengthening of incomes at a household level within the kingdom.”

He thanked the consumers for positively receiving the drink and added that His Majesty’s subjects should drink the beer because other than contributing to the Kingdom’s income and creating jobs for people in Buganda, the kingdom would re-invest its share of revenue into the Kingdom in key areas such as health, education and sanitation.

Nyimpini added that consumers should remember to bring back the bottles so that UBL can make sure their favorite beer is always in stock. He also reiterated the Katikkiro’s call for farmers to grow cassava and supply UBL to produce Ngule.
