The Ultimate Top-Four Showdown: Ollie Watkins on Aston Villa’s Defining Clash with Manchester United

The air is growing thin at the summit of the Premier League. We have entered the treacherous, unforgiving stretch of the campaign where dreams are either realised or shattered. This Sunday, the Theatre of Dreams plays host to a modern gladiatorial contest: third-placed Manchester United against fourth-placed Aston Villa. It’s a Champions League qualification six-pointer of the highest magnitude.

For football purists, there is one destination to witness the drama unfold. This pivotal clash, along with every other breathless moment of the Premier League season, will be broadcast live on Your World of Champions, SuperSport.

For Aston Villa’s talisman, Ollie Watkins, the gravity of a trip to Old Trafford is inescapable. The stakes transcend a mere three points; it is about taking those points directly from a direct top-four rival. “Yes, exactly. You just said it yourself, it’s massive,” Watkins admits when discussing the magnitude of the encounter.” “United have been unbelievable since Michael Carrick came in. It was always difficult to go there previously, so it’s going to be even tougher now with the way they’re playing, scoring goals and playing good football.

“The transformation of the Red Devils has certainly not gone unnoticed by the Villa forward. “They’re doing so well, winning a lot of games back-to-back and it looks like they’re scoring a lot more goals. I’ve always found it difficult to play against Man United.””I don’t think we have beaten them previously. I think the last time we beat them was the boss’s first game here, which was about three and a half years ago, I think.”

“So yes, it’s going to be difficult. There’s no doubt about it. They’re always tough to play against. They’re a top team with world-class players however I’m looking forward to it though.”

Adding fuel to the fire is the lingering memory of how last season’s fixture concluded in Manchester. When asked if Villa owe United one, Watkins offers a wry, measured response. “You could say that. I don’t want to get involved with decisions that are out of my hands, like the referees’ decisions, but you could say that. Like I said, if we can get three points from that, it will be big. “One player who knows exactly how to breach the United defence is Villa’s Morgan Rogers, who previously scored twice against them. “Morgs has grown into that role and taken that responsibility on himself.” “Like you said, when he scored two goals against Man United, they were two brilliant moments in the game and they completely changed it. That’s what top players do. So yes, he’s an amazing player.”

    Navigating the Blip

Despite the dizzying heights of fourth place, Villa arrive at Old Trafford navigating a tricky spell, marred by a recent agonising defeat to Chelsea and a run of just one league win in six. “Yes, I think obviously, to start with, it’s always disappointing to lose, especially at Villa Park,” Watkins reflects on the Chelsea fixture. “To go one goal ahead and then concede and lose the game in the way we did is disappointing and it does hurt. I felt like we were in the game and we had a lot of chances.”

“Obviously, I scored and it was ruled out by a toenail. I think if we go into halftime 2–1 up, it’s a completely different game. They score straight after and then they go into halftime 2–1 up. So, you know, fine margins.”

“But look, we’ve had an unbelievable season so far, so we can’t let this small period affect us too much.”

Addressing the broader downturn in form, the striker remains resolutely calm. “I’m not sure really. I think previously, at the start of the season, there were periods where we weren’t playing too great, but we picked up and won some games maybe when we probably shouldn’t have. People don’t see that. They just see you winning. They just see the three points on the board or check the Sky Sports app, but they don’t actually see whether you’ve played well or things like that.”

“So, there are times where I felt like we could have won or done a little bit more. We’ve been scoring and maybe just switching off a little bit together. But like I said, it’s a blip and we’ll definitely overcome it. We’ve got the right team, the right manager and the support to overcome it. So, I’m not worried.”The blueprint for returning to winning ways is a simple one. “I think just hard work and listening to the boss, really. It’s as easy as that,” he asserts. “It’s not always going to go your way and it’s not always going to end up like this. So, yes, just keep working hard, listen to the game plan and what the manager says, and I’m sure we’ll overcome it.”

    European Dreams and Personal Growth

Villa’s ultimate destination remains crystal clear: returning to Europe’s elite table.”Yes, I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t the aim,” Watkins says of the Champions League race. “From the start of the season, you always set your goals, and that was the big aim. We did it a couple of seasons ago and the feeling of that achievement was amazing.”

“Being in the competition last year, playing against the best teams and beating them, I think that’s what everyone is striving to do and experience again. So yes, that’s the goal and then one step further is to win the Europa League. That’s what we’ve got our eyes on. “The allure of European silverware is a driving force in the dressing room. “It would be unbelievable. You saw the atmosphere last season when Tottenham won it, and I was slightly envious watching that. It’s such a big competition that they’ve won and now they’re playing Champions League football.”

“It’s another way into it, like you said, by winning the competition. I think everyone wants to win a trophy at the end of the day. It’s a nice reward at the end of the season and I think it’s been a long time since the club has done that, so it would be nice to be part of it.”

On a personal level, Watkins exhibits the profound honesty of a seasoned professional when assessing his own campaign.”It’s been a difficult season for me; I’m not going to lie. I’ve not been where I wanted to be, but these things happen. It’s always a learning curve.” “You must look at it and see where you can improve and just keep trying to improve day by day and game by game. But yes, this season I haven’t been where I wanted to be.”

He credits his manager for guiding him through the turbulence.”I think that’s the only way to improve. Like I said, hard work and listening to a manager like him. He’s got all the experience in the world and has worked with top players and world-class players. So, every bit of information I can take on is always helpful, and then I try to use that to improve my game.”The burden of leading the line is now shared following the January arrival of Tammy Abraham. “Tammy and I work together during the striker drills in training. I’ve played with Tammy before with England, so I knew him. He’s a familiar face, a good player and a good person. So, it was nice to see that familiar face come in. Hopefully we can play a lot more together.”And with Rogers flourishing behind him, Watkins is eager to capitalise on the chemistry. “Everyone knows Morgan is a top player. The way he’s progressed, he’s taken another step up and really thrived in the Premier League. Last season he had a good season, but this season he’s gone up another level and people have started to realise how good a player he is.”

“He’s powerful, quick, strong and can obviously score goals. I can’t speak highly enough of Morgs. We have a great relationship on the pitch. He’s always looking to find me. I probably should have got him a lot more assists this year, let’s put it that way. But he’s an amazing player.”As the final whistle of the season beckons, Aston Villa’s destiny is entirely in their own hands, and the next chapter is written this Sunday in Manchester. Rivalry reignited: North West Derby chaos between Liverpool and Man Utd live on Showmax Premier League

This Sunday, 19 October, Liverpool host Manchester United in the iconic North West derby at Anfield. This monumental fixture is more than a rivalry – it’s a crucial battle for points that could define the early season momentum for both clubs. The current champions, Liverpool, find themselves in second place, just one point off the top, but head into the game on the back of a recent 2-1 loss to Chelsea.

Their opponents, the Red Devils, are pushing to climb out of their 10th-place position and will carry confidence following a solid 2-0 win over Sunderland. Fans won’t miss a minute of the action, as this high-stakes contest will be shown live on Showmax Premier League.

Ahead of the highly anticipated clash, Manchester United stars Luke Shaw and Mason Mount shared their candid thoughts on the essential elements required to secure a result in a league as demanding as the Premier League.

Former Liverpool forward David Ngog also gives his thoughts on the tasty affair ahead.  For the Red Devils, the path to overcoming rivals like Liverpool hinges on consistency and mental strength, something defender Luke Shaw stresses the team is actively addressing. “I think the most important thing is the team’s overall performance,” Shaw said.

“There are definitely a few positives to take from some of our games, but for us, consistency is key. Lately, we’ve been in a pattern of winning one game and then losing the next, and that’s something we’ve talked about fixing. We need to build momentum, keep winning, and pick up points regularly. “At the end of the day, even if the performance isn’t perfect, what matters most is getting the result. Winning always lifts the mood, restores confidence, and keeps the energy in the squad high. For me, it’s all about maintaining that consistency.”

Midfielder Mason Mount echoed the need for stability, particularly in closing the gap between their form at Old Trafford and their results on the road, a vital requirement for success at Anfield. “This season, I think our home form has been really strong, and we want to keep that going. Away from home, though, we’ve slipped up a bit, especially conceding goals at crucial moments. That’s an area we know we need to improve on,” Mount admitted. “Like Luke said, consistency is so important. We need to find that balance between our home and away performances to stay on track.

“Shaw also spoke about the team’s need for resilience following setbacks, the kind of quality that will be tested when facing Liverpool’s formidable attack. “Of course, it’s never easy losing a game; it’s always tough to take. But for us, what really matters is how we respond. We know we won’t win every match in the Premier League, it’s such a competitive league, but it’s about how we react to setbacks,” Shaw explained. “Keeping the atmosphere positive and the energy high helps us bounce back stronger. Having a game soon after a loss can help you reset. So, for me, it all comes down to how we react and keep pushing forward.”

Mount further highlighted the need for real-time tactical adaptation to get the better of their Merseyside rivals. “As a team, all the players understand the different roles within the team, and in different games, we change small details here and there,” Mount added. “We have got to be ready for that within the game. In the Premier League, teams are at such high levels, they change things within the game; we need to do the same”.

“We need to adapt too, whether it’s our formation or the way we press or set up, and always be ready and switched on for that to win the game.” For any player to perform at their highest level in a fixture as immense as the North West derby, confidence is essential. Mount and Shaw agreed that this foundational quality is key to translating effort into points.

“I think for me, obviously speaking to the manager and lads as well, it’s about consistency. We’ve spoken about that, all of us as players. Consistency is really important. If we perform to the level we know we can, we will win more games. For me, that’s the most important thing,” says Mount.

Shaw also offered strong advice to the club’s young academy prospects, putting confidence at the heart of their journey to one day playing in matches of this magnitude.“Always enjoy what you’re doing. When you’re enjoying it and happy, that brings the best out of you, which is confidence, and confidence is really important in football. You have to be confident to deliver high standards. The young generation needs to listen to coaches, take their advice, and work on the things you need to do; they’re only trying to help you to build you into a more complete player.”

Meanwhile former Liverpool striker David Ngog has tipped the Reds to walk away victorious come Sunday. However, he does anticipate a tough battle against the Red Devils at Anfield. “It will be a tough encounter, but Manchester United are struggling as well at the moment, so Liverpool should win,” said Ngog.

He is predicting a 3-1 win to his former club. “I think Liverpool has an advantage in this game. They are a better side and they are playing at home as well. It’s always important to win , especially with the difficult time the club has had over the last few games. I’m sure they will cope with the pressure, and I see them winning 3-1.” Ngog, who famously scored against Manchester United at Old Trafford in a memorable encounter, says he enjoyed coming up against the Red Devils.

“To score against United was a great feeling. One of my best memories with Liverpool, especially in front of the Kop. it was a great communion with the supporters. The hype ahead of the game is crazy as well. Already the week before you can feel the pressure with the media as well, so it’s a special game.” The stage is set for a monumental weekend.

Some of Europe’s best compete in Europa League

Any competition that sees the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Porto, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Lazio competing for the trophy is bound to grab the attention of fans world-wide. It is thus not surprising that the start of this season’s edition of the UEFA Europa League group phase has been much anticipated and on Thursday the wait is finally over.

Last year’s beaten finalists Arsenal begin their campaign in Group F with a tricky away encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt, who last season were only beaten in the semi-finals on penalties by Chelsea, who went on to win the competition.

Frankfurt’s preparations suffered a setback with a defeat against struggling Augsburg in the league on the weekend, but coach Adi Hütter promised a different game on Thursday. “We need to learn from our mistakes, as we are now facing Arsenal. We did not do well against Augsburg, but Eintracht will play in the Europa League and then at home. We have to find the mix now,” he said.

Midfielder Dominik Kohr said the whole team is looking forward to the match against the Premier League side. “That will be an absolute highlight.”

The other two teams in the group, Standard Liège and Vitória Guimarães face each other in Belgium.

Manchester United, who won the competition in 2017 should have the better of Kazakhstan visitors Astana at home in their opening Group L game, while England’s third participant, Wolves will have their work cut out for them if they want to escape Group K.

With Beşiktaş, Slovan Bratislava and Braga – whom they face at home in their opening match – in their group, Nuno Espírito Santo’s team will face an uphill battle to advance to the knock-out stages.

Wolves, who last played in Europe 39 years ago, have several Portuguese players on their books and midfielder Adama Traore believes that gives them an advantage.“The coach comes from Portuguese football and so do many of our players. They know the players and the league, and they have played teams like Braga many times before. “It has to help that we know so much about them and they don’t know so much about us.”

Many older fans see the Europa League as that what the Champions League used to represent, allowing the minnows of European football take on the giants of the sport. One of the teams that made it through to the group phase is F91 Dudelange. Amongst their opponents in Group A are Sevilla, whose squad has a value of 283.20 million Euros. The Luxembourg part-timers of Dudelange are valued at 4.03 million Euros, yet on the field of play they are all the same – and that is the real stuff that dreams are made of.

Football fans throughout Africa can be part and parcel of these dreams as the Europa League will be broadcast exclusively and live throughout the continent on the StarTimes football channels.
