    Trace Studios takes over distribution of Ugandan movie- Kony: Order from Above

    Trace Studios has taken over the distribution of Ugandan movie- Kony: Order from Above.

    The exciting development has been disclosed by the movie director Steve T Ayeny.

    “This Christmas is special, it came as a gift to all of us !One of the biggest global distribution platforms , TRACE TV , has taken our film, Kony Order From Above!It is a win for the Ugandan film industry. We are so thankful and give glory to God. Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year 2022,” Steve said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

    Since its release in 2017, the movie has been a success story on both local and international scene. In 2020, it was selected for the African Film Festival (TAFF), an event that celebrates films and arts that either promote African culture; address issues affecting Africa and people of African descent; or explore African landmarks and historic leaders. In 2017, Trace created Trace Studios, a division dedicated to the worldwide distribution and production of audiovisual programs produced by Trace as well as by external producers.

    Trace Studios is a brand and a division which aims to position the Trace group as an influential leader in the distribution and production of audiovisual content in the United States, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, etc.

    About the movie:

    This movie drama based on actual happenings tells a story of two youth, Otti and Aguti who fall in love during the tumultuous northern Uganda Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency. They are however separated when Otti is abducted at age 11.

    While in abduction, Otti attempts to escape back home and is instead caught and battered at each attempt. He decides to stay in the bush with the LRA rebels and is soon introduced into the inner command circle of notorious LRA rebel leader Joseph Kony’s.

    Despite his concession to notoriety, his love for Aguti remained undeterred.

    In an attempt to sustain it, Otti wrote letters to Aguti through the village reverend. During the LRA raid to Aboke Girls School, Aguti and other girls are then abducted.

    Upon arrival at the Kony camp, the abductees are shown to Kony who falls in love with Aguti instantly without knowledge of the relationship between her and Otti.

    Ugandan movie ‘Kony-Orders from Above’ selected for Oscar Awards

    Kampala: A Ugandan movie ‘Kony– Order from Above’ has been selected for the 92nd Academy Awards. It is the first ever in history that a Ugandan movie is recognized. 

    Popularly known as the Oscars and given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the United States of America (USA), the awards are an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.

    The movie was selected on Wednesday by the Uganda Academy Selection Committee (USASC) as Uganda’s official entry for the 2020 Oscar Awards in the category of best international film.

    This marks the very first time Uganda is submitting an entry to the prestigious awards following the launch of the seven-member UASC in July this year.

    “The selection is only provisional pending the film’s fulfillment of all academy eligibility criteria ahead of the October 1, 2019 Oscar submission deadline for the country entries,” said Godfrey Musinguzi, UASC Chairperson in a statement dated September 11, 2019.

    Adding, “The film’s human story , universal themes and authenticity make it a unique piece of home grown art worthy of celebrating on the global platform that is the Oscars.”

    Upon selection, Steve T Ayeny, the movie director said he was so happy to achieve such a milestone.

    “I feel like God has been faithful to Uganda. This is the first of its kind and I am very happy about this. This is bigger than me as the director and producer. God was in it from day one. I want to thank my crew, cast and everyone who supported this film. As someone who hails from Northern Uganda I wanted to tell our story our own way just to spread love and encourage people to forgive each other focus on the transition and development in Northern Uganda,” revealed Ayeny.

    New Kony movie wins Zanzibar award

    Acclaimed Ugandan filmmaker Ayeny T. Steve, walked away with 1000$ for his movie “KONY: Order from above” He won the Best East African Talent award at this year’s Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF). A festival, established in 1997 aimed at developing and promoting film and other cultural industries, held annually in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

    The award winning film is yet to be premiered in his home country Uganda, but has already received international acclaim for its depiction of renowned LRA rebel leader Joseph Kony and his negative impact on the people of Northern Uganda.  A feat that is worth recognition and praise of the young filmmaker’s talent.

    The plot centers around two lovers caught in the conflict of war and the choice between love and duty. The male lead, Otti, is abducted by the LRA at the age of 11 and is raised as a rebel with no room of escape. Despite the circumstances, his love for Aguti remains. In an effort to keep in touch with her, he writes and delivers letters through the village reverend – only to be discovered by the rebels who raid and abduct everyone from the girl’s school she’s in. Upon arrival at the rebel camp, the abductees are paraded before Kony whose interest falls upon Aguti without knowledge of the relationship between her and Otti. It’s a story that will paint a picture of the north in ways you’ve never seen before. A picture of love, loss and hope.

    The Award is a great inspiration to Ugandan Filmmakers whose efforts have often gone unnoticed by international award ceremonies such as ZIFF, and brings with it hope for any future projects that may tell a similar or better tale of Uganda’s social, political and economic strife.
