    Photos: Roast & Rhyme lives up to Halloween Enjoyments Promise

    Halloween décor and costumes, fun group activities and effortlessly executed live music ensured that the just-concluded Afro-Halloween edition of Roast and Rhyme – and the last edition of 2022 – was an exceptional experience.

    Organised by Swangz Avenue and Bell Lager (a product of Uganda Breweries Limited), the event took place at Jahazi Pier in Munyonyo on Sunday 30th October on a weekend that saw millions of people around the world celebrate the festivities of Halloween.

    Attendees were encouraged to come dressed in their most creative and scary Halloween costumes – which many did – and upon arrival, found most of the venue well-decorated with all manner of scary props to match the theme.

    A “killer” photo booth was stationed at the entrance for attendees to pose for pictures with props like cleavers and a face painter was on hand to help bring their scary photo shoots to life, while the haunted house featured giant bugs, spider webs, skeletons and so on – all of which came together to deliver a Halloween twist to the event’s Enjoyments.

    Additionally, the event featured a cook-off, which saw 3 people picked from the crowd and challenged to roast meat within 20 minutes while using Bell Lager as one of the ingredients, which saw the ultimate winner – Jojo – win herself a grill from the brand.

    The famous “Kiss Cam”, karaoke session and beer cocktails and ‘Bell na Nyama’ combos were other crowd favourites that helped make this edition a fun experience for both couples and groups of friends – all under Bell Lager’s Mpola Enjoyments theme. A Mpola Park was also set up, featuring its own DJ set, group games like ‘Put A Ring On It’ and vendors selling everything from portraits to apparel.

    Justin Agaba, the Bell Lager representative, said, “Mpola Enjoyments is all about having a good time with your crew, friends or loved ones in a calm and relaxed setting – as long as you have the right vibe, some Bell Lager and some nyama. This edition of Roast and Rhyme has gone above and beyond by incorporating an unconventional Halloween element into the chill picnic and live music vibe we aspire to bring to our consumers.”

    The event also featured live performances by Janzi Band, Geosteady, Double Black Band and Azawi.

    Bell Lager to Deliver Halloween Enjoyments at Roast and Rhyme

    Halloween celebrations are usually defined by the nighttime, bizarre and scary costumes, and snacks. This year, Bell Lager is bringing a Mpola Enjoyments twist to the upcoming Afro-Halloween edition of Roast and Rhyme at Jahazi Pier Munyoyo.

    Mpola Enjoyments is a new way of having fun in unique and unconventional ways defined by chill vibes with friends, roasted meat and ice-cold Bell Lager anytime, anywhere.

    Happening on the 30th of October 2022, this will be the last edition of the quarterly picnic experience by the lake, and a celebration of Uganda’s love for roasted meat, live music and coming together with friends and family.

    Unlike the rest, this edition will feature African artefacts and Halloween-themed décor to portray an Afrocentric Halloween vibe for the revellers. The experience will also feature a mini carnival with a variety of games, a themed food section, Bell Lager cocktail bars, a photo booth, a roasting area, and of course live Ugandan music for groups of friends or family to enjoy.

    According to the organisers, anyone will be welcome to take part in the open mic karaoke sessions and lovers of meat will be challenged to a grilling competition that will see the winners walk away with Bell Lager hampers.

    “This edition of Roast and Rhyme presents a great opportunity for us to engage our revellers in an exciting experience that merges Halloween with Mpola Enjoyments. As usual, we will go out of our way to ensure that our consumers enjoy a chill afternoon and evening with those closest to them, with a great Halloween experience, some Nyama and cold Bell Lager,” said Edgar Kihumuro, the acting Bell Lager brand manager.

    Picnic mats and camping chairs. Sun hats and shades. Cold beer and grilled meat.

    This was the vibe at Jahazi Pier Munyonyo as Roast and Rhyme held its epic 17th edition last Sunday.

    This being the first edition since the lifting of lockdown in January, the organisers – Swangz Avenue and Bell Lager – came out in a big way with an incomparable all-round experience.

    As usual, guests were encouraged to carry their own grills and meat with fire marshals on hand to help them set up, in addition to several food vendors, including the Meat Guy.

    An exciting cook-off pit two journalists and two members of the public selected at random against each other, with each being given limited ingredients, one type of meat and a trivia question that would earn them a chance to pick any other ingredient, with the winner walking away with a ‘Bell na Nyama’ hamper complete with a brand-new grill.

    The emcee, Roger Mugisha, then initiated a Kiss Cam and of the 5 couples selected, only one followed through with the kiss – Bebe Cool and his wife Zuena; another hugged; while the rest simply looked on, clueless about how to go about kissing their workmates or cousins in public.

    It was very awkward for them, but fun stuff to watch for the rest of the crowd.

    This being the Reggae Ragga edition, live reggae music filled the atmosphere as Elijah Kitaka and the Lions of Africa band set things off with a performance that included a cover of Koffee’s ‘The Harder They Fall’.

    The legendary Tshaka Mayanja and the Black Roots band followed with their lead singer Tonya Ahenda locking the crowd in a trance with her powerful voice covering some of the world’s most iconic reggae tunes.

    In a stunning feat, Kenneth Mugabi hopped on stage and engineered a masterful mash-up of his ‘Naki’ with UB40’s ‘Cherry Oh Baby’.

    The event also featured performances from Vinka, Mudra, Winnie Nwagi and Ziza Bafana who performed with a live band. In-between performances and all through to the end of the event, DJs Alisha and Selector Jay entertained the crowd with reggae and ragga mixes.

    Overall, the event was the ultimate display of Bell Lager’s Mpola Enjoyments theme, which encourages consumers to have a good time anywhere, at any time with friends, some games, grilled meat and ice-cold Bell Lager.

    Limit X makes comeback at Roast and Rhyme Thanksgiving Edition

    Isaac Rucci, one of the members of the legendary gospel trio, Limit X, put up a magnificent performance for the attendees of Roast and Rhyme’s Thanksgiving Edition.


    The organisers say the event, which was held at Jahazi Pier in Munyonyo and sponsored by Bell Lager, was aimed at appreciating the loyal attendees who have never missed an event since its inception in 2016.

    The MC of the evening, Roger Mugisha issued a special call to October babies and those whose birthday it was gifts from theorganisers.


    The show got off to a great start as singer, songwriter and guitarist The Body of Brian performed some of his new and unreleased songs. Afterwards, Isaac Rucci held the stage with many of Limit X’s greatest hits like Clap Your Hands, Miracle, J.E.S.U.S and Malibongwe (Come to Me).

    In the heat of the moment, Patrick Salvador Idringi, Weasel and Jose Chameleone all took the stage and performed unrehearsed as they were not part of the event’s line-up, a feat which sent the crowd into a dancing frenzy.

    The show’s headline act was Winnie Nwagi, who narrated the story of how her love for music began. She spoke of mimingsongs while in high school, then went ahead to perform Ne-Yo’sSo Sick and Etana’s My Man, before being joined on stage to perform her Amaaso hit with Swangz Avenue label-mate Vinka.

    All the performers were backed by the amazing Myk Ouma and his talented live band, after which DJ Crim took the crowd through the afterparty.

    This is the last Roast and Rhyme Edition to be held this year, with the next one expected in February 2020.
