Building a stronger future for the Uganda National Lottery: Reflections on six months of growth and opportunity

As the Uganda National Lottery marks its seven-month milestone, ITHUBA Uganda and the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) reflect on a period of progress, learning, and collaboration. While the journey has come with its challenges, it has also laid the groundwork for an exciting future as the lottery continues to expand its reach and engagement across Uganda.

Launching a National Lottery is a significant undertaking, and the past six months have presented both opportunities and hurdles. Building awareness, encouraging participation, and gaining trust in a new market required innovative strategies and close collaboration between ITHUBA and the NLGRB.

Eric Mabuza, General Manager of ITHUBA Uganda, remarked, “The first six months have been a valuable learning experience. Together with the NLGRB, we’ve tackled early challenges head-on, setting the stage for steady progress and future success. While we still have much to achieve, our commitment to growing the lottery responsibly and inclusively remains unwavering.”

The Uganda National Lottery began its journey with five thrilling games namely LOTTO, POWERBALL, DAILY LOTTO, SPORTSTAKE 10, and SPIN 4 CASH — designed to offer participants diverse and exciting ways to play and win. These games established a strong foundation for the lottery’s operations.
Recently, ITHUBA expanded its portfolio with the launch of five EAZiWIN E INSTANT games, bringing quick and rewarding game play to participants and broadening the National lottery’s appeal. These online games are accessible and engaging, catering to the evolving preferences of players.

In addition to expanding its game portfolio, ITHUBA has also prioritised making the National Lottery more accessible. Ticket purchases have been streamlined through digital platforms, enabling participants to buy tickets via their mobile devices, a development that underscores the lottery’s commitment to convenience and market needs.

While it is still early days, the Uganda National Lottery is focused on continuing to grow responsibly. Plans for the next phase include expanding access and introducing new games and initiatives that will bring the National Lottery closer to participants across Uganda.
The introduction of new Innovative games tailored to participant preferences are on the horizon, offering fresh ways to engage and win.

A partnership with Interswitch will soon enable ticket purchases making it easier for participants without internet access to play. Plus, by expanding into Trade Lance, ITHUBA aims to increase the lottery’s presence nationwide and empower local businesses to serve as key distribution points via USSD.
The National Lottery will roll out ticket sales at selected Vivo Energy forecourts, providing participants with even greater convenience during their daily routines.

Denis, CEO of the NLGRB, added, “The collaboration between ITHUBA and the NLGRB has been instrumental in navigating the early phases of the Uganda National Lottery. While there is still much work to be done, we are optimistic about the future and committed to growing the lottery in a way that benefits participants and contributes to the country’s development.”

While the Uganda National Lottery is still in its early stages of generating revenue, the commitment to supporting good causes remains a central pillar of its mission. Future contributions will be directed toward initiatives that create meaningful community impact, with updates to follow as the National Lottery continues to grow and stabilize.

Eric Mabuza concluded, “We are just beginning to scratch the surface of what the Uganda National Lottery can achieve. With the support of our participants and stakeholders, we look forward to building a brighter future, one ticket at a time.”

ITHUBA Uganda is the official operator of the Uganda National Lottery, working under the regulation of the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB). • UGX 1 Billion Lotto Jackpot: Kasese herdsman on cloud 9 after winning UGX186m

UGX 1 Billion Lotto Jackpot: Kasese herdsman on cloud 9 after winning UGX186m

Kampala: A lucky twist of fate turned a routine day for a youthful herdsman into a life-changing experience.

Enock Nayebale, a 20-year-old from Hima, Kasese District, emerged a winner in the Uganda National Lottery’s historic LOTTO jackpot Draw No.17 held on August 3rd, 2024.

“Ever since I bought my first phone in April, I’ve been thinking about how things could change,” shared Nayebale with journalists at the ITHUBA Uganda headquarters.

Inspired by local radio advertisements about the LOTTO jackpot, he decided to take a chance. He purchased a UGX 1,000 LOTTO ticket using the USSD code *278# on August 3rd. Though his numbers didn’t match all six, matching four made him part of Division 5, sharing a staggering UGX 932,340,000 with four other players.

Receiving the win notification via SMS, Nayebale was skeptical. “I thought it was fake,” he confessed. Discouraged by family concerns, he initially put the message aside. However, a follow-up call from ITHUBA Uganda’s Winner Services team and a visit from the Western Regional Manager dispelled his doubts.

Nayebale travelled to Kampala for the first time, receiving a warm welcome and support from ITHUBA Uganda Winner Services Team, including financial and trauma counselling. He is now the third claimant of the historic jackpot, sharing his good news with his mother who, like him, is overjoyed.

Nayebale plans to use his windfall to build a new home for his mother and secure his future with savings. “I am deeply grateful and still in shock,” Nayebale said. “I plan to build a beautiful home for my mother and save a substantial portion of the prize money.”

The Uganda National Lottery has seen significant success with recent jackpot winners, including Samuel Mbonimpa, a mason from Kyazanga, Lwengo District, and Zeverio Namisi, a factory loader from Kawempe. Mbonimpa and Namisi each claimed UGX 186 million from their respective wagers of UGX 4000 and UGX 9000.

Winners are encouraged to come forward and claim their prizes at ITHUBA Uganda’s offices.
Michelle Van Trotsenburg, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at ITHUBA Uganda, congratulated Nayebale and encouraged other winners to come forward: “As Ugandans celebrate Nayebale’s success, we urge the remaining two jackpot winners to claim their prizes at our head office.

Remember, if you believe you’ve won for our other games, visit a registered retailer or the location where you purchased your ticket for validation.”
