    Huawei Technologies Uganda Successfully hosts the 3rd National ICT Job Fair 2024

    Kampala: Huawei Technologies Uganda Company Limited in partnership with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance has successfully launched the National ICT Job Fair 2024, held at National ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa.

    The two-day event set for 21st and 22nd November, was officiated by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja and attracted over thousands of participants, including fresh graduates, ICT professionals, industry leaders, and key government and private policy makers, marking a significant milestone in fostering innovation, skill development, and employment opportunities in Uganda’s ICT sector.

    Themed “Shaping Uganda’s Digital Future: Bridging Skills, Innovation and Opportunity” the job fair provided a dynamic platform for participants to connect with potential employers, gain insights from keynote speakers, and explore the latest trends in technology. Over job opportunities and internships were showcased by leading companies in the ICT industry, including Huawei Technologies.

    The chief guest, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja the Prime Minister, upon arrival inspected the different exhibition booths from the different companies that where showcasing what they do and what opportunities they are offering to the youth in the ICT sector of Uganda. In her opening remarks she highlighted the government’s commitment and prioritization of ICT in its development plans for the socio-economic transformation of the country.

    “Through strategic investments in infrastructure, skills development and innovation, we are creating an enabling environment for ICT to thrive,” Hon. Nabbanja said, noting that ICT remains one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, offering limitless opportunities and unlocking opportunities for economic growth, empowers our youth, and positions Uganda in the global digital economy. She thanked the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance for the strategic partnerships with key stakeholders like Huawei Technologies to bridge the digital divide and skill mismatch gap to unlock the potential of our youth and build a robust ICT ecosystem.

    Senior officials from the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, other government line ministries, agencies and departments were present at the job fair. Hon. Dr. Chris Bayromunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance in his key note address pointed out that the ministry is charged with the mandate of driving digital transformation in the country and ensuring technology benefits all Ugandans. “We must invest in young people and make them an asset for the country, not a burden.” said the honorable minister. Also, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of ICT, Dr. Aminah Zawedde pointed out the ministries’ goal of creating at least 30,000 direct jobs related to the ICT sector. she went on and said “We are emphasizing innovation and interpretation to get solutions that address the challenges facing the country.”

    Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong said that ICT is a key driver of development. The industrial chain cooperation, one of the 10 partnership actions announced by China during the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in September this year, includes plans for China and Africa to build a digital technology cooperation center and initiate 20 digital demonstration projects, he said. “With its continued growth, I believe the ICT sector can create more job opportunities for talented young men and women, greatly addressing their concerns and fostering digital inclusiveness,” Zhang said.

    Mr. Ssali Gao, The Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Uganda in his speech emphasized Huawei’s commitment to bridging the gap between education and the industry. “At Huawei, we believe technology is a bridge to opportunity. They say that thanks to technology, the world has become one small global village and I could not agree more. In the near future, technology and ICT will be the backbone of every industry in the world. This means that skilled personnel in these sectors will be highly needed.” “This, ladies and gentlemen, is why we are here today, attending this ICT job fair,” said Mr. Gao.

    Attendees directly met and engaged with leading Ugandan institutions in the ICT industry offering jobs, internships, and training exploring potential roles in areas such as software development, data science, network engineering, and cyber security. The skills development and training workshops provided hands-on sessions led by experts from Huawei and other industry leaders which offered training in sought-after skills, including coding, digital marketing, resume writing and AI applications.

    Furthermore, esteemed speakers and panelists from government, academia, and the private sector discussed trends, challenges, and future prospects in Uganda’s ICT landscape availing connections with ICT professionals, innovators, and peers to explore partnerships and collaborations.

    Experts call upon Ugandans to adopt technology in their day to day activities during the National ICT Job Fair

    Experts have called upon on Ugandans to adopt technology into their day to day lives especially businesses as the world keeps on advancing. The remarks were made at the National ICT Job Fair 2024 held at the Nakawa Innovation Hub.

    This event was organized by Huawei Technologies (Uganda ) company Limited in conjunction with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance. The panelists while speaking under the theme of ‘Shaping Uganda’s Digital Future, Bridging Skills, Innovation and Opportunity’ said that the world is evolving at a higher technological speed but Uganda seems to be left behind at the moment.

    Emmanuel Emodek a panelist who is also the co-founder and director of ChapChao Financial Services stated that Ugandans should look at technology as a means of employment not just entertainment. Furthermore, Mr. Emodek said that Ugandans ought to trust technological advancement the same way they treated the COVID-19 pandemic. His remarks were in light of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is sweeping across the globe at a high speed.

    Additionally, he also implored the government to reduce the high costs of acquiring technology because most businesses are choking due to these costs.

    CLOSING THE ICT INDUSTRY SKILLS MISMATCH GAP

    Kampala: The Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja has this morning flagged off the Ugandan participants to attend the 2024 Huawei Leadership, Employability, Advancement Possibility (LEAP) digital talent training in Shenzhen China.

    Speaking at the flag off ceremony, the Prime Minister encouraged the participants to take advantage of the opportunity represent Uganda with the highest levels of patriotism, emerge victorious and contribute positively to the labor force. “Thank you, Huawei Technologies Uganda, for this initiative and your commitment to the technological advancement of Uganda over the years.” said the Prime Minister.

    As Huawei’s flagship corporate social responsibility program, Leadership Employability Advancement Possibility (LEAP) program has been held consecutively since its first launch in 2016 in Uganda. Up to date, a total of 50 Ugandans have benefited from this program through physical trainings held in China, and another 162 beneficiaries have joined the program virtually and obtained certificates.

    Mr. Ssali Gao, the Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Technologies (Uganda) Co. Limited highlighted that Huawei acknowledges Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) have become crucial growth engines for many different industries. As an ICT leader, Huawei is committed to promoting ICT industry development in Uganda, and aims to drive long-term economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Huawei also seeks to close the gap between knowledge learned in the classroom and the skills required by the industry, and enhance knowledge transfer.

    Talent development is crucial for the growth of any industry. The rapidly growing ICT industry has greatly changed business models and customer requirements.     Kampala: The Huawei ICT Innovations Cup Football Tournament 2024 concluded in spectacular fashion as MTN Uganda emerged victorious over Huawei Technologies Uganda Company Limited in a thrilling final held at Kampala International School Uganda football grounds on Saturday 20th July, 2024.

    The dramatic match ended with a score of two goals to one, highlighting the skill and determination of both teams.

    The awarding ceremony that followed was a grand celebration of talent and sportsmanship.

    The Chief guest, Dr Aminah Zawedde, The Permanent Secretary Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and other distinguished guests including The Undersecretary Ministry of ICT and National Guidance Ms. Sophia Nantongo, Chief Marketing Officer MTN Uganda, Mr. Sen Somdev, Huawei Technologies Uganda Managing Director, Mr. Sunrise Xie, were present to honor the achievements of the teams and players. The coveted Huawei ICT Innovations Cup trophy was presented to MTN Uganda by the chief guest amid a shower of confetti and cheers from the crowd.

    The Chief Guest, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, Permanent Secretary Ministry of ICT and National Guidance graced the cheerful event. She congratulated MTN Uganda for the well-deserved win and extended her heartfelt gratitude to all the teams, players, coaches, and supporters who came together to make the tournament possible. She appreciated Huawei Technologies Uganda Co. Limited for organizing the football tournament which is in alignment with the efforts of the Government of Uganda to address the growing burden of lifestyle diseases. Dr Aminah also appreciated the opportunities presented for the technical officers in the ICT sector to meet in a different environment to network, exchange ideas and grow their connections. She closed by urging all members present to stay innovative. “Innovation knows no boundaries, so let’s innovate in the field sports just as Huawei has done by organizing this tournament and I hope it becomes an annual event” said Dr. Aminah.

The tournament transcended the boundaries of a mere sports match; it was a vibrant platform for the ICT sector to forge connections, exchange insights, and foster collective growth. “Your passion and commitment have brought excitement and joy to all of us. Each match was a testament to your hard work, and each goal a highlight of your talent.” said Mr. Sunrise Xie. He thanked each team for being part of this extraordinary journey and appreciated them all for the exceptional performance and sportsmanship exhibited.

    The players representative, Mr. Luyonde Henry from Airtel Uganda thanked Huawei Technologies Uganda for a well-organized tournament and the opportunity for Airtel Uganda to participate in such an activity. He congratulated his team for making it to the semifinals of the tournament and the spirited display of teamwork that brought Airtel Uganda thus far in the competitions. He went to add “We have seen fierce competition, but we have also seen players helping each other up, teams congratulating their opponents, and fans coming together in their love for the game.”

    The tournament awarding ceremony kicked off with a thrilling game between Ministry of Health and Airtel Uganda to determine the 2nd runners up which set the spirit of competition. The game was marked by intense action and strategic play from both sides but in the end, victory belonged to Ministry of health after scoring three goals to one. MTN Uganda later took on Huawei Technologies Uganda Company Limited in an ambitious and action-packed game which ended MTN 2 – Huawei 1. Overall, it was a gripping match showcasing the skill and determination of both teams. The tournament was launched of 8th June, 2024 by the Minister of ICT and National Guidance Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and run over a couple of weekends till the final and awarding ceremony.

    Huawei Technologies Uganda Co. Limited organized the first ever Huawei ICT Innovation Cup Football Tournament as a means of encouraging physical activity to combat desk-bound lifestyles by bringing together different enterprises from both the public and private sectors for a spirited display of team work and friendly competition on the football field. The tournament also aimed at fostering social networks and sportsmanship by bringing together Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Uganda Communications Commission, National Information Technology Authority-Uganda, MTN Uganda and Huawei Technologies Uganda Co. Ltd in group A. While group B consisted of Uganda Police Force, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Uganda Revenue Authority, Ministry of Health and Airtel Uganda.

    Some of the other awards won included, Fighting Spirit Award-Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. Best Organizer Award-Uganda Revenue Authority, Fan’s Favorite Team-Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Most Entertaining Team-MTN Uganda, Future Star Award-Airtel Uganda, Corporate Pioneer Award-National Information Technology Authority – Uganda, Team Spirit Award-Uganda Communications Commission and the Community Involvement Award-Uganda Police Force.     Kampala: Huawei Cloud Enterprise Innovation and SME Summit Uganda 2024 kicked off in Kampala where over 100 industry startups, fintech’s, venture capitals, government organizations and key strategic partners in Uganda gathered for a colorful event held at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel to share ideas on startup innovation, ecosystem collaboration and digital transformation while using Cloud solutions.

    Representatives from some startups like KaCyber, ioTec and Vouch digital also shared their success stories about Huawei Cloud services and Huawei’s contribution thus far.

    The Chief Guest Rt. Hon. Rukia Nakaddama the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda reassured the guests that the Government of Uganda through Ministry of ICT and National Guidance is committed to the agenda of digitalization.

    “This initiative emphasizes the role of digital transformation in creation of jobs, stimulating innovation and boosting economic growth particularly for SMEs and these digital technologies are essential for SMEs to stay competitive and overcome traditional business barriers allowing them to improve processes and reach new markets”.

    The 3rd Deputy Prime Minister appreciated the Huawei management for the commitment to digitalization and thanked Huawei for their ongoing support to enterprises in Uganda encouraging businesses to adopt digital solutions that is evidenced in the testimonials from Kacyber in the transport, ioTEC in the financial sector and encouraged more SMEs to tap into the cloud support offered by Huawei under the Startup Program in Uganda that has been launched. She challenged members present to spread the word beyond the walls of the room and do massive sensitization and allow people in rural areas to get a better understanding of the Huawei Cloud services.

    Hon. Gume Frederick, Minister of State for Trade in charge of Cooperatives said that the government is doing its best efforts to go fully digital by 2040. In his remarks, Hon. Gume noted that Uganda is going global and as such a business owner needs to be on the lookout for their production costs, efficiency in production and marketing globally to foster sales and Huawei provides solutions to operate optimally with the data security. He also encouraged young people to do business remotely and reduce unemployment rates. Hon. Gume appreciated Huawei Technologies Uganda for its contributions towards empowering SMEs in Uganda to grow using technologies like cloud.

    Mr. Sunrise Xie, the Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Uganda Company Limited noted that for over 20 years, Huawei has thrived in Uganda, witnessing and contributing towards the country’s digital transformation. The journey has allowed Huawei Technologies Uganda Company Limited to grow, create jobs, and nurture talent, largely due to the hospitality and the excellent business environment in Uganda.

    “The Ugandan start-up ecosystem is expanding significantly, with a constant increase in new start-ups across the country. The Ugandan start-ups are regarded as the hope for national development. They are key drivers of innovation and economic growth.” said Mr. Sunrise.

    Mr. Sunrise Xie also announced the launch of the Huawei Cloud Start-up Program for Uganda as a new milestone of Huawei Cloud in Uganda and emphasized the commitment to continue empowering enterprises to innovate and grow. He concluded by thanking the government representatives present for their generous support towards the digitalization of the different enterprises and SMEs in Uganda.

    Mr. Yang Hui, Vice President Business Development Huawei Cloud noted that Huawei 30 years of excellence in the ICT space has allowed it to offer three key services to its customers namely infrastructure, technology and expertise which are key for digitalization. Huawei has built a global cloud network which includes storage, computing and networking service solutions for its customers. He also informed the audience that Huawei has developed and launched its own database system offering the world the best choice for data solutions.

    Mr. Kin Kariisa, CEO Next Media Group thanked Huawei Technologies for the work they continue to do in Uganda in supporting local companies to attain their goals. He also implored the SMEs present to work with Huawei if they are to be able to grow. Cloud computing offers media houses like Next Media in storage and management of computing costs. He ended his remarks by urging government institutions to embrace cloud computing to save tax payers money by doing more with less.

    A very engaging and productive panel discussion under the event theme “Empowering Enterprises to Innovate and Grow” which comprised of thoughtful leaders, entrepreneurs and industry experts who dissected the challenges in the local space, shared insights and ignited collaborations. Panelists included: SC Pheona Wall, the CEO League of East African Directors (LEAD), Managing Director of Infinity Computers &Communications Company LTD (i3C), Mr. Charles Musisi, Ms. Suzan Nsibirwa, the Managing Director of Nation Media Group and the Moderator Ms. Evelyn Namara, the Global Digital Inclusion Partnership (GDIP) as the Senior Programs Manager.

    At the end of the summit, Huawei Uganda officially launched the Huawei Cloud Startup Program for Uganda together with the invited guests. Speaking at the launch, Ms. Sooma Mukyala Fouziya, the Public Relations Manager at Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. said the initiative aims to support SMEs with ICT solutions like cloud to grow their businesses so that in the long run, the country boasts of an intelligent economy where all businesses are operating online as Huawei is leaving no one behind. “Unlike other cloud providers, Huawei has offices in Uganda where clients can seek redress in Uganda where clients can seek redress when they encounter any problems.” she said.

    Kanungu; Airtel Uganda, Uganda’s leading and first 5G telecommunications company together with Huawei, have today extended the opportunities of the internet to teachers, health workers, social workers and local leaders in Kanungu District by connecting them with 200 Smartphones.

    The initiative aims to empower these vital community members with, smart devices, internet connectivity, transforming the way they serve and impact their communities.

    The event, held in Kanungu, featured a keynote address from Airtel Uganda’s Legal and Regulatory Director, Mr. Dennis Kakonge, who emphasized the transformative power of the internet when used for productive activities.

    “In today’s fast-paced world, access to information and seamless communication is vital for personal and community development. Airtel Uganda understands the transformative potential of smartphones, which is why we are proud to be at the forefront of providing affordable services,” Kakonge remarked.
    The smartphones distributed to teachers, health workers, social workers and local leaders are loaded with 5 GB of Airtel data every month for three months. This allocation aims to harness the life-changing power of affordable and seamless connectivity, enabling educators to access resources, healthcare providers to provide better services, and local leaders to coordinate community projects more efficiently.

    The event was honoured by the presence of Hon. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, who has played a pivotal role in implementing policy reforms and direction to make connectivity more accessible and affordable. This reflects Uganda’s commitment to digital inclusivity and fostering innovation, making this initiative possible.

    Airtel Uganda expressed gratitude to HUAWEI, its partner in this venture, for their unwavering support in making this initiative a reality. Together, they are not just providing smartphones; they are offering tools for progress and a brighter future for the people of Kanungu.
    Mr. Kakonge urged the beneficiaries to use these devices responsibly and drive positive change in their lives and communities. The event marked a significant step in Airtel Uganda’s mission to connect communities, enhance learning, and improve social service delivery.

    The Minister for ICT thanked the partners for this initiative and urged them to extend this to other hard-to-reach areas across the country. “A smartphone is a tool of change. As government we shall continue to explore partnerships that will accelerate the connectivity of everyone. We are also exploring avenues for reducing tax rates on devices so that we can achieve this faster, as envisaged in the National Development Plan III” Dr. Chris Baryomunsi remarked.

    Katakwi: Vice President of Uganda launches the 2023 – 2024 Huawei ICT Competitions in Uganda and also awarded the outstanding Ugandans that took 2nd position globally at the Huawei ICT Competitions 2022-2023.

    With a series of talent development campaigns, including the ICT competition, Huawei hopes to skill up more than 700,000 ICT professionals by end 2023. The aim is to bridge the ICT talent gap, increase academia-industry communication, and advance the digital transformation of industries.

    In the 2022-2023 Huawei ICT Competitions, Uganda emerged 2nd position globally which rose the Ugandan flag up high. This group of young intelligent Ugandans have been awarded for their outstanding efforts to excel and put the name of Uganda among the top performing countries in ICT.

    In the Vice President’s speech, she congratulated the outstanding students for positioning Uganda’s name high in the ICT competitions. She added on to encourage more Ugandans to take part in such competitions because through such competitions, some outstanding students are now being employed by Huawei and others in other good entities. H.E Jessica said that through use of ICTs, Ugandans can also use that chance to open up opportunities for themselves and others too.

    The Vice President of Uganda concluded by thanking Huawei Uganda for all their support and the opportunities they have created for the young Ugandans to explore their potential on a global level in ICTs. She congratulated the outstanding Ugandan and also flagged off the 2023-2024 ICT competitions wishing all the participants for this cohort the best of luck.

    Mr. Gao Jian, the Deputy Managing Director Huawei Uganda in his speech explained that “Huawei ICT Competition is an international competition and exchange platform aimed to providing students with a platform to compete healthily and exchange ideas, thus enhancing their ICT knowledge and practical skills as well as increasing their ability to innovate by using new technologies and platforms.”

    Mr. Gao concluded by expressing his gratitude to the Government of Uganda, all partners and the people of Uganda for all their support towards the drive of narrowing the digital divide in Uganda.
    “Let us all join hands to have a fully connected and intelligent world through use of the latest emerging technologies. We trust that once we have a better you, we will all have a better Uganda.” statement that closed Mr. Gao’s remarks at the event.

    Airtel Uganda joins Huawei Uganda, ICT and National Guidance Ministry to transform Uganda through ICT

    Airtel Uganda has joined Huawei Uganda and the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance in a campaign to improve Uganda’s service delivery, social and economic transformation through offering quality and affordable ICT services.

    This was executed through a Memorandum of Understanding that was launched between Huawei Uganda and the Ministry of ICT on 19th May 2022 in the National Innovation Hub at Uganda Institute of Communications Technologies (UICT), Nakawa.

    The MOU will see an establishment of the Huawei ICT Academy at the UICT. This MOU will provide adequate skills, training and certification courses such as 5G, A.I, Cloud, Security, Data communications and others that are required by employers to UICT students and ICT officers.

    At the launch, Airtel Uganda pledged to offer internship placement opportunities to UICT students who are the direct beneficiaries of the MOU.

    Speaking at the event, Airtel’s Chief Technical Officer Mr. Rajesh Agrawal said Airtel was excited to be part of the digital transformation drive that would foster Uganda’s ICT vision.

    Mr. Agrawal noted that Huawei has promoted and built a strong foundation of knowledge base for the students of ICT and Engineers to prepare them to become excellent cyber experts who will efficiently serve the ICT industry as well as the people of Uganda at large. “We are proud of being part of this transformational journey for a very strong Digital Uganda,” he said.

    Mr. Agrawal added that ICT has become the backbone for all the segments of society without any bias to the gender, age, demography and economic status. “ICT is no more a luxury but has become the basic need of one and all who need to survive and thrive in this competitive world.”

    Airtel was commended at the launch by the Permanent secretary Ministry of ICT and National guidance Dr. Aminah Zawedde and the Minister Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi for being part of the digitization journey of Uganda.

    “The Government of Uganda is driving national ICT development and pursuing the 4IR while ICT technologies such as 5G, AI, Cyber Security. ICT is the enabler of digital transformation, the application of AI, Cloud and Big Data will change people’s lives and future business enormously and Cyber Security is key to secure the network,” Dr. Aminah Zawedde said.

    “Today we launch this MOU, but I do not want us to stop at launching rather to see to it that the students are trained, certified and get jobs. I thank Airtel for offering us the jobs,” she added.

    The ICT and National Guidance Minister Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi then awarded Airtel Uganda with a plaque confirming Airtel Uganda’s offer as an internship center for the students from the ICT Academy.

    Huawei Launches the 2021 edition of Seeds for the Future programs in Uganda

    Kampala; Huawei has today kicked-off the 2021 edition of the Seeds for the Future training Program virtually.  The launch has been officiated by H.E Ambassador Mugisha Fred the Deputy Head of missions of the Ugandan Embassy and acting Ambassador in Beijing.

    He called upon the students to use the seeds for the future program to create networks that will further their ambitions in life.“its worth noting that the government of Uganda acknowledges the importance of ICT and its able growing revolutionary input, therefore I would to thank Huawei for this (seeds for the future) good initiative which not only connects people to people connection but also goes a long way to sharpen the minds of young Ugandans.

    To the students, as you participate in this program, use this people to people connections to create networks that will further your ambitions in life,” said Ambassador Fred Mugisha during the virtual launch ceremony.

    The seeds for the future program was launched by H.E Yoweri Museveni in 2016 and over 40 Ugandan Students have gone to China up to 2019.

    Approximately 150 have taken part in the online training up to date since the 2020 online program. This year’s online training program has attracted has attracted 119 students from 15 universities of Uganda both public and private universities such as Makere, MUBs, Lira, Gulu Soroti, Nkozi, and Cavendish university among others.

    This eight day virtual training consists of three hour pre-recorded courses and 13 hours of live stream in technology entry level and advanced sessions such as 5G, A.I and Cloud.

    The seeds for the future program shall cover hot topics of the tech industry such as cyber security and also give interactive visit sessions to the Chinese Great Wall and other sites.

    According to the deputy managing director and Public Relations director of Huawei Uganda Mr. Gaojian, “Because of COVID-19 global pandemic and its effects on transport, borders and gatherings. We have been encouraged to live what we profess as an ICT Company by introducing an online version of the seeds for the future program. During this program, we have made full use of the benefits of; learning and communication without borders, showing the future communication trends through we link, a sense of exclusivity of a teaching form and the convenience of not being restricted by the place among others”.

    He further encouraged the students to attend the virtual training fully for them to be able to graduate, acquire Huawei certification, goodies and internship opportunities.
