Sport; Watch UEFA Europa League on StarTimes Europa League Final group game for Premier League clubs

Having done the hard work in the preceding matches, the three Premier League clubs can go into their final Europa League matches on Thursday without pressure.

Leicester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are already guaranteed a place in the knock-out stage of the competition, with the Gunners having already secured top spot in Group B.

Leicester and Spurs, meanwhile, could follow suit with a win in their final matches.

Arsenal, who were beaten 2-0 by Spurs in their league match on Sunday, are the only club in the competition with five wins out of five and will be keen to maintain that record in Dublin against Dundalk.

The Irish club have lost all their five group games and as much as Arsenal will want to ensure that their run continues, Dundalk will be looking to end theirs.

For Arsenal coach Mikal Arteta a good Europa League run could be essential as he has come under increasing pressure as results in the Premier League have not gone according to the clubs’ faithful fans wishes.

In Arsenal’s last Europa League game – a 4-1 win against Rapid Wien – Arteta played Alexandre Lacazette behind striker Edward Nketiah and the French international was praised by Arteta afterwards.

“He played a good game in that position. It suits him. He’s really good at linking play, he worked hard and scored a beautiful goal.”

In Group G Leicester City are at home against AEK Athens.

Like Braga, The Foxes are on 10 points, but are ahead of the Portuguese team on the head-to-head results and a victory against AEK will guarantee them first place, irrespective how Braga play in Ukraine against Zorya Luhansk.

Spurs coach Jose Mourinho, who has twice won the competition – with Porto and Manchester United – goes into their final game at home against Antwerp needing his team to beat the Belgian club to overtake them at the top of Group J.

Spurs’ victory against Arsenal helped the Londoners maintain their top spot in the Premier League club and Mourinho could well be facing some difficult choices soon whether he can afford to continue pursuing all competitions, but with his record in the Europa League, is seems likely that the competition ranks high on his list of priorities.

Some of Europe’s best compete in Europa League

Any competition that sees the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Porto, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Lazio competing for the trophy is bound to grab the attention of fans world-wide. It is thus not surprising that the start of this season’s edition of the UEFA Europa League group phase has been much anticipated and on Thursday the wait is finally over.

Last year’s beaten finalists Arsenal begin their campaign in Group F with a tricky away encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt, who last season were only beaten in the semi-finals on penalties by Chelsea, who went on to win the competition.

Frankfurt’s preparations suffered a setback with a defeat against struggling Augsburg in the league on the weekend, but coach Adi Hütter promised a different game on Thursday. “We need to learn from our mistakes, as we are now facing Arsenal. We did not do well against Augsburg, but Eintracht will play in the Europa League and then at home. We have to find the mix now,” he said.

Midfielder Dominik Kohr said the whole team is looking forward to the match against the Premier League side. “That will be an absolute highlight.”

The other two teams in the group, Standard Liège and Vitória Guimarães face each other in Belgium.

Manchester United, who won the competition in 2017 should have the better of Kazakhstan visitors Astana at home in their opening Group L game, while England’s third participant, Wolves will have their work cut out for them if they want to escape Group K.

With Beşiktaş, Slovan Bratislava and Braga – whom they face at home in their opening match – in their group, Nuno Espírito Santo’s team will face an uphill battle to advance to the knock-out stages.

Wolves, who last played in Europe 39 years ago, have several Portuguese players on their books and midfielder Adama Traore believes that gives them an advantage.“The coach comes from Portuguese football and so do many of our players. They know the players and the league, and they have played teams like Braga many times before. “It has to help that we know so much about them and they don’t know so much about us.”

Many older fans see the Europa League as that what the Champions League used to represent, allowing the minnows of European football take on the giants of the sport. One of the teams that made it through to the group phase is F91 Dudelange. Amongst their opponents in Group A are Sevilla, whose squad has a value of 283.20 million Euros. The Luxembourg part-timers of Dudelange are valued at 4.03 million Euros, yet on the field of play they are all the same – and that is the real stuff that dreams are made of.

Football fans throughout Africa can be part and parcel of these dreams as the Europa League will be broadcast exclusively and live throughout the continent on the StarTimes football channels.
