    Ngeye Clan wins the 2024 BIKA Netball Tournament with 35-25 against Njovu Clan

    Kampala; The highly anticipated Airtel-BIKA Football Tournament officially kicked off today at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku with an opening match between Mamba Namakaka (Gabunga) and Butiko which ended with a 2-3 win for Butiko, while in the 2024 netball finals Ngeye won with 35 points against Njovu who registered 25 points.

    This year’s BIKA Tournament will bring together 52 clans that make up the Buganda totems. Some of the clans participating include the reigning champions Ngonge clan which scored 2-0 against the Mbogo clan, thus lifting the 2023 BIKA Cup trophy while in netball, Ngeye won with 37 points against Nyonyi’s 36 points in the 2023 BIKA Netball Championship.

    The Airtel-BIKA tournament is a grassroots sports initiative aimed at bringing clans together for cultural and socio-economic purposes and has been a symbol of fostering a spirit of unity and community in the kingdom and the country as a whole. The 52 clans will play and go through eliminations up to round 16 where they’ll be clustered into 4 groups that will then qualify for the quarter-finals where 8 teams will make it to the semi-finals before the final game.
    This year’s edition promises to be another thrilling showcase of talent and tradition, with clans across Buganda coming together to compete.

    In attendance was the Airtel Uganda Sales and Distribution Director, Ali Balyunwa who expressed his excitement for the new season of the BIKA tournament and Airtel Uganda’s commitment to the partnership between the brand and Buganda Kingdom.
    “We are proud to participate in this year’s edition, just as we did in the previous BIIKA tournament which embodies the spirit of community and togetherness. As a company that believes in uplifting the communities that we operate in, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that empower our people, especially the youth,” he said.

    “I extend my warmest congratulations to the winners of the 1st match of the season, Butiko Clan, not forgetting our Netball stars, Ngeye Clan. Your hard work and dedication to the game of Football and Netball is truly commendable. This, at AirteI Uganda, is what we aim to accomplish, to give the youth a Reason to Imagine all the possibilities that they can achieve. I call upon everyone to make time and watch the BIKA games and show support,” he added.

    Commenting on the successful kickoff of the tournament, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga expressed his gratitude upon seeing the passion and enthusiasm of participants and fans.

    “Every year, the participants, fans, and well-wishers of the kingdom turn up in large numbers to support this important event and everything it stands for. There is so much great talent that we discover through these initiatives who then go on to pursue their dreams in sports. And all this would not be possible without all of your support and from the Kingdom’s partners such as Airtel Uganda who have walked with us through many of our initiatives such as the recently concluded Kabaka Birthday Run, The Masaza Cup, among many others,” he said.

    The tournament will continue to captivate audiences with thrilling matches, great sportsmanship, competition, and socio-economic engagements throughout the season.

    Ngonge Clan Named Champions of the 2023 Airtel – BIKA Tournament

    Kampala; The 2023 Airtel – BIKA Tournament has climaxed at Wankulukuku Stadium yesterday with Ngonge winning the 2023 championship.

    Ngonge Clan attained the title after defeating Mbogo Clan with a 2- 0 win in football while in netball, Ngeye won with 37 points against Nyonyi’s 36 points.

    The BIKA Tournament is a grassroots tournament that draws together 56 clans, including the royal clan, the Abalangira, that make up the Buganda totems. The 2023 tournament included Football and Netball games.
    Ali Balunywa the Sales and Distribution Director at Airtel Uganda congratulated all the 56 clans that braved the 2023 BIKA Tournament season and showcased great talent on the pitch since the games were launched in May this year.

    “Emerging as a winner requires dedication, hard work, and resilience to be able to compete proficiently, and all the teams have embodied a winning spirit, hence they are all winners,” said Balunywa, adding that, “Sports like football and netball are steadily growing in Uganda and I am impressed that talent is scouted from tournaments like BIKA and Masaza Cup to represent the country in other tournaments at a national and regional level.”

    He added, “Our brand promise is to give our people A Reason to Imagine and now with the enhancement of our network to Uganda’s First 5G Network, we believe sportsmen will be able to keep up-to-date with other sports competitions across the world through digital and social media channels and borrow tactics that can make them stand out as well as compete at a global stage similar to what She Cranes showcased in South Africa recently.”

    Airtel Uganda has rolled out the 5G Network across 50 sites in the central business district and will scale up the network on 25,000 sites across the country on a site-by-site basis. These advancements are aimed at giving Ugandans an opportunity to leverage technology to improve their well-being as well as participate in different social-economic activities like sports, agriculture, and entrepreneurship among others.

    Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga congratulated Ngonge Clan for winning the 2023 tournament, and appreciated all the Clans that participated in the tournament.
    “BIKA Games celebrate the different clans and the heritage of Buganda Kingdom which is a unifying factor in the Kingdom and surrounding areas. It also plays a key role in social economic development as people come together to rally behind their teams on and off the pitch and engage in the different entrepreneurial opportunities presented by the tournament. I thank Airtel Uganda for being a notable partner and for always extending support which is instrumental in helping us organize such engagements,” Owek said.

    “We thank Buganda Kingdom for pioneering activities like BIKA tournament where talent is groomed. We commit to continue supporting initiatives that are intended to inspire people in communities where we operate to become the best they can be and showcase their potential once given platforms like the BIKA tournament,” Balunywa concluded.

    In 2022, Ndiga was crowned winners of the BIKA Tournament after defeating Lugave to a 3 – 1 win in Football while Ngeye emerged champions in netball after beating Mmamba to a 37-35 score.

    Bryan White Foundation sponsors Bika Tournament

    The 2018 Bika Tournament is set to officially kick off on Saturday 12th May 2018 at Kitende and today the organisers have unveiled major sponsors.

    Bryan White through his Bryan White Foundation has sponsored Bika Tournament 2018. The activist whose foundation’s is to awaken Youths from poverty has announced a UGX 10m sponsorship to the annual Baganda tournament. He also contributed 100 footballs to be used in the tournament which kicks off this weekend at Kitende.

    On top of the sponsorship, Bryan White has promised to support Buganda in any activity. He promised to engage in every activity that the kingdom invites him in it.

    The Bika cup tournament is a knockout cup competition played by the 52 clans of the Kingdom. The first tournament was held in 1950. The Bika tournament was officially launched by Ssekabaka Sir Edward Mutesa II in 1950. The Mbogo clan was the first winner of the tournament. The tournament was launched to promote unity and harmony among the People in the Kingdom through their clans.

    The Kabaka officially opens and closes the tournament, and at the final, His Majesty hands over the trophy to the champions. The tournament is held in June every year.

    The annual Buganda inter-clan tournament features clans (Ebika) like Ngabi Nsamba, Nnyonyi Nyange, Ndiisa, Mamba Kakoboza, Musu, Ffumbe, Mutima, Lugave, Mpologoma, Nkerebwe, Enjaza, Entalaganya, Nsenene and Ngonge.

    Buganda premier Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga said people should utilise their talents rather than engaging in alcohol and women. “If you want to play good football, don’t engage in alcohol and women,” Mayiga said.
