    What Uganda Gains from the annual Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon

    The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon is now World Athletics Certified, becoming the First International Certified Label Marathon in Uganda. This was revealed on Tuesday during the launch of 2026 (5th edition) which is slated to take place on 22nd August in Kasese. The kingpin of the Marathon is Mr. Amos Wekesa, it’s founder and proprietor of Great Lakes Safaris Limited.

    Below is what Uganda will gain from the now globally recognized Marathon;

    The Rwenzori Marathon being upgraded to a World Athletics Label Marathon is more than a title; it’s a game-changer for Uganda. The benefits are clear, measurable, and multi-layered.

    Tourism Advantages to Uganda

    The Label status draws more visitors every year, and they stay longer, arriving before and leaving after the marathon. This extended stay doesn’t just fill hotel rooms; it means visitors spend more on food, transport, and experiences, exploring the country beyond the race.

    Infrastructure and amenity development. Hotels, lodges, restaurants, resorts, and roads expand to meet demand, creating a better experience for both tourists and locals.

    Global media attention enhances Uganda’s online image and publicity, showing the world a vibrant, organized, and exciting destination.

    Uganda is now firmly on the global map, recognized as a premier sports tourism destination.

    Visitors interact with locals, fostering cultural exchange and connecting communities with the wider world.

    Economic Advantages to Uganda

    As of 2026, the global marathon industry is recognized as a multi-billion-dollar economic engine, with the top 50 generating over $5.5b for their host cities.

    More visitors and longer stays mean more money circulating in local economies. Businesses, hotels, restaurants, shops, and service providers benefit.
    Increased sales; high numbers equal high demand.

    Employment opportunities, especially from developed infrastructure, particularly in hospitality, transport, and event management.

    The growth isn’t limited to major cities; smaller towns in Western Uganda also benefit significantly, showing that sports tourism can transform rural and regional economies more than cities could.

    The event encourages repeat visits, building long-term economic momentum.

    Overall, the marathon strengthens Uganda’s tourism revenue, GDP contribution, and local livelihoods, turning sports tourism into a lasting economic asset that continues paying dividends well after the runners cross the finish line.

    Celebrating a Milestone

    Let us celebrate this big milestone as Ugandans. Most of all, let us celebrate the legendary @wekesa_amos for doing the unthinkable. Kudos to the Rwenzori Marathon team and the sponsors who have walked this journey side by side with them.

    Thank you for believing in what once seemed like a dream. Today, we are here proud, firm, and upgraded.

    Uganda will host A Label Marathon on 22nd Aug 2026

    “I really want to congratulate my brother Wekesa Amos, the Ministry of Tourism, and other partners for making this happen. Such marathons provide a pathway that nurtures and ushers our young athletes to the competitive world of sports. From my own experience today, Rwenzori Marathon provides a unique opportunity for us to promote healthy living in the wake of non-communicable diseases, promote young talents, and boost tourism. I was taken aback by the number of tourists that took part in the run. It is a testament that Uganda is indeed the number one tourism destination. Together, we need to consolidate our efforts as stakeholders and use sports to promote tourism as our country’s niche. Trust me, the benefits will be immense. I am upbeat about the forthcoming #KampalaMarathon2024 this December,” Hon. Peter Ogwang said.

    Gorilla Heights Lodge opens its doors to business & it is a sister lodge to Park view Lodge

    A new posh safari lodge has opened its doors to the public for use in South Western Uganda.

    This was revealed by tourism number one promoter Amos Wekesa who had this to say;

    “It’s a new Lodge in the southern part of Bwindi national Park owned by a Ugandan which is important.

    It’s good to see Ugandans taking investments seriously and creating jobs….over 40 jobs at Gorilla heights Lodge

    I can’t wait to see Ugandans start a chain that goes across Africa like some Mauritius people have done.

    It all starts at home, you succeed at home, it’s easier to move on to other countries. Latitude 0 for example has a Kenyan investor

    Yesterday I read a report about how chains are positioning themselves across the continent sent to me by Daniel Bwabale

    In 2019, international chains are investing in 125 hotels in North Africa and 275 hotels in Sub Saharan Africa

    They chains are investing 51 hotels in Egypt, 36 hotels in Morocco, 49 hotels in Nigeria, 19 in Algeria, 34 hotels in Ethiopia.

    In Kenya 27 hotels, Cape Verde 11 hotels, Tunisia 16, Ghana 9 and South Africa 18 and those are the top 10 investment destinations for the chains on the continent

    The top 10 international chains investing on the continent are:

    Accor is working on 57 hotels with 13, 543 rooms, Raddisson 47 hotels with 8,774 rooms, Hilton 55 with 11, 209 rooms, Marriott 81 hotels with 16, 905, Media 8 with 2, 317, best western 18 with 1,613 rooms,

    Onomo 8 hotels with 1,103 rooms, Hyatt 8 hotels with 1507, Wyndham 8 with 1,324 rooms and Mangalis 15 with 1,781

    How are these countries managing to attract alot of chains? Their tourism boards are lobbying plus taking marketing seriously.

    Just imagine Latitude 0 with 49 rooms is right now employing 179 Ugandans since it opened in Kampala,”.
