‘Supreme Mufti’ Sheikh Zubair Kayongo Dies At Aga Khan Hospital In Nairobi

A senior Muslim scholar also known as ‘Supreme Mufti,’ Sheikh Zubair Kayongo of the Kibuli based faction has passed away.

The spokesperson of the Kibuli based Muslim faction, Sheikh Hassan Kirya confirmed that Kayongo died on Thursday morning at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where he was rushed on Tuesday. He becomes the second high profile Ugandan to die in the same hospital in a space of one week.

Sheikh Kayongo was one of the VIPs at the Kabaka’s 60th birth day celebrations at Bulange Mengo on Monday.

Sources say from Bulange he travelled to Tanzania for a function from where he is reported to have fallen ill and was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.

Kirya said Muslim leaders had immediately converged for a meeting at Kibuli and said he would give details later.

Sources from Kibuli however said he succumbed to kidney failure.

Kayongo is the second Ugandan celebrity to die from Aga Khan Hospital in a space of one week after former WBS and NTV news anchor died from shortly she had arrived for specialized cancer operation. She was buried yesterday at her ancestral home in Kanoni, Masaka district.
