Smart Toto launches ‘1 Million Books To 1 Million Kids Project’

Kampala: After the Success of their Read To Learn Project, which was launched at the height of Covid19, it seemed like the curators at Smart Toto had rested for the year 2020. But if a press conference they had yesterday is anything to go by, Smart Toto has announced another exciting community project dubbed 1 Million Books To 1 Million Kids.

Speaking at the launch of the 1 Million Books To 1 Million Kids Project, the founder and Team leader, Hasfa Mago explained that the poor reading culture across the various Ugandan communities is because of lack of access to books. And that making them available would not only improve their literacy levels, but positively impact their livelihoods immediately and in the future.

“The concept of the outreach is as clear as its title. We want to give 1 million books to 1 million kids. And we have already started. Through the One Million books to One Million kids’ campaign and the Read to Learn project, both of which have literacy development in communities as the central focus, we have managed to distribute 55,612 books to students and libraries among other learning materials. We have reached out to and impacted over 4,586 children in schools, families and communities across Uganda. We have conducted reading sessions in the regions of Mpigi, Wakiso, Nebbi, Mbarara, Kabarole and Kampala,” explained Hasfa.

Hasfa Mago, who is renowned for her passionate endeavors in impacting underprivileged children explained that the focal points of the campaigns are; providing learning material to the children in the communities, Relieving the parents from the worry about the current education situation of their children right now because of Covid-19, and Giving children in the communities a chance to be learning during the school lock down.

Hasfa urged the general public, institutions, and corporates in big and small groups to come out and support the cause.
“Even something as little as 100k, after 10 people pool 10k each, can buy books that can start a small community library. That is why we urge everyone to join hands, and let’s help the children of the nation,” Hasfa reiterated.

Smart Toto is a youth led social enterprise working to nurture a strong reading culture in Uganda through publishing authentic books, setting up community libraries and conducting ‘Read to Learn’ projects in communities to boost learning and, early literacy development. Our aim is to partner with the able and like-minded organizations and individuals in a campaign to print and distribute learning material to the children in the communities in need. This campaign is geared towards making sure that all children have access to learning material during the COVID-19 school lock down.
