NWSC explains performance based trainee program
Uganda National Water and Sewerage Corporations (NWSC) has dismissed allegations brought by some sections of student trainees that the Corporation’s senior staffs are demanding for sex before getting placements.
In a statement extended to The Red Times which run the accusation story, National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Managing director Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha says the company runs a graduate trainee programme which offers opportunities for graduate trainees to get training and relevant experience in their fields of training.
“The programme helps NWSC meet the Corporate Social Responsibility of exposing Ugandan youth to the work environment, gain experience and prepare themselves for the labor market.” Dr Mugisha said.

Mugisha also said the programme also helps NWSC identify potential talent to be absorbed in the Corporation as and when opportunities arise.
“There is also a parallel programme of student interns from higher institutions of learning who require training as part of their degree/diploma or certificate courses.” He added.
These are trained for 3 months. In line with the Corporation Human Resource Policy, applications are received from aspiring trainees who are shortlisted and subjected to interviews.

Successful candidates are offered training placement for a period of six months which may be extended after application for extension by the trainee and successful appraisal from the supervisor.
He said the trainees are paid allowances for lunch and transport and are offered medical insurance for self during the period. The allowances are subject to statutory deductions.
The Managing director also explained that after successful completion of the training tenure, successful trainees may be absorbed into employment when there are vacant positions.
“The absorption is through, internal adverts, appraisal, external adverts or recruitment to new towns and areas gazetted for takeover by NWSC.”
“Trainees are eligible to apply and compete for the available positions. Successful candidates in the interviews are recommended to Executive Management for appointment”.
Trainees are absorbed in service through achievement of performance targets in the departments or areas where they are deployed and achievement of individual performance targets.
He explained that the allegations of unfairness and sexual harassment of trainees are unfortunate.
“NWSC has a policy of zero tolerance to harassment and discrimination of any nature. NWSC is committed to water for all, for delighted customers by a delighted workforce.” He stated.
