NWSC Board members assess service levels in Masaka-Mbarara cities
On Tuesday, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Board members visited NWSC installations and assessed the progress of ongoing service delivery projects in Masaka and Mbarara cities.
The Government of Uganda through NWSC with support from AFD are working on the Development of Water and Sanitation Infrastructure in the South Western Towns Mbarara-Masaka corridor.
Project Scope
•Construction of a 30million litres/day water intake along River Kagera
•A new Water Treatment plant at Kagera
•A 48kms pumping main to Mbarara
•3million litres reservoir in Mbarara
•Rehabilitation and improvement of Ruharo water treatment plant, supply network and sewerage system.
•Rehabilitation and improvement of Masaka-Nabajjuzi Water treatment plant, supply network and sewerage network
•Extension of water supply from Mbarara transmission to all population centers in the district including Nakivale and Oruchinga refugee settlements
•Source protection initiatives for River Rwizi and Kagera
•Laying of 175kms of transmission mains from Kagera Water Treatment Plant to Mbarara
•Construction of 12 booster stations in Kagera
•Construction of 17 new reservoirs/booster sumps of combined capacity 4.3million litres in Isingiro
•Laying of 100km of Distribution pipework in Isingiro
Among other works.
The Board team leader Mr George Runge Muzungyo assured Mbarara residents that water production capacity will improve from the current 16million litres of water per day to over 34,000 litres of water per day upon completion of the project.
“From the current 165,000 people that we serve now in Mbarara, we shall serve over 389,000 and 355,000 in Mbarara and Masaka cities respectively.
We shall also adequately supply clean water to Isingiro upon project completion in 2030.” he said
The Board members noted the challenges affecting supply reliability in Mbarara and Masaka cities i.e pollution and degradation which affects the quality and quantity of water.
