MTN pays last respects to the late Winnie Madikizela Mandela
MTN Uganda paid its last respects to fallen South African freedom fighter and Anti-Apartheid stalwart, Winnie Madikizela Mandela at the signing of her Condolence Book ceremony held at the South African High Commission in Nakasero, Kampala last week.
The late Winnie Mandela passed away in Johannesburg in the early afternoon of Easter Monday, 2nd April 2018 after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the year began; said the Mandela Family in a statement. She was 81.
Winnie Mandela, popularly known as the ‘Mother of the Nation,’ was also former wife to Anti-Apartheid icon, founder of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party and later first black President of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. Winnie Mandela is remembered for keeping the struggle against Apartheid rule alive, while her husband was jailed at Robben Island for his role in the same.
Funeral Arrangements
Today 14th April, the late Winnie Mandela was given a befitting send off, of the highest honour – a category 1 special official funeral. It entails elements of military ceremonial honour. An official memorial service for Madikizela-Mandela and special official funeral proceedings were held at Orlando Stadium, Soweto. She was laid to rest on the same day.
