Jumia Food Launches Annual Food Index Report
Kampala; Leading e-commerce platform Jumia Uganda has released a Food index report detailing consumer trends and behaviour in the food industry in Uganda.
The report comes on the heels of the World Food Day and the Jumia Food Festival currently running until 31st October on the Jumia Food app.
“The Food Index report gives a glance into the popular trends in the food industry and insight into what consumers are buying when it comes to their daily essentials.” Ron Kawamara Jumia CEO said.
The report revealed the popularity of fast foods like fried chicken and pizza plus popularity of fast food restaurants such as KFC, Food Hub and Cafesserie among food consumers.
“Fast food remains very popular among Ugandan consumers because of its wide variety & affordable price. A typical fast food meal ranges between 10 – 15,000 UGX and this can consist of chicken, burgers, sandwiches which come accompanied with a side dish. It is for this reason we see it be so popular. “ Jumia Food Uganda country manager Timothy Mugume added.
However local food is starting to emerge as a consumer favourite with local food becoming one of the fastest growing cuisines. One of the reasons behind the growth can be linked to local restaurants offering meals for as low as 5,000 UGX on the Jumia Food platform.
The Food Index report also revealed actions Jumia has taken to support local vendors during the COVID-19 period which included introducing contactless delivery with deliveries being made without any bodily contact between the delivery rider and consumer. Jumia riders were also required to wear face masks with every delivery, donation of face masks to the ministry of health and a partnership with UNDP to support local market vendors.
Currently, Jumia Food has 130+ food partners including restaurants, supermarkets and fresh produce markets. The platform also has a foot print in over 100 locations in 3 districts, Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja where Jumia Food was launched in September 2020.
