Rugby Fraternity Unites in Walk Against Mob Justice to Honour Sydney Gongodyo

Kampala: The Ugandan rugby fraternity on Saturday united in a powerful stand against mob justice during the Memorial Walk, held in honour of the late Sydney Gongodyo, the Stanbic Black Pirates and Uganda Rugby Cranes player who was brutally killed in a mob attack in Bukoto last month.

Held under the theme “Sydney Is Me: Stop Mob Action,” the memorial walk attracted hundreds of rugby players, coaches, fans, administrators, corporate partners and members of the public. The procession began at Kampala Rugby Grounds before winding through the city to Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere, the home of Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club.

Participants carried placards bearing messages such as “Every Life Matters,” “Justice, Not Violence,” and “Stop Mob Action,” calling for an end to the growing vice that has claimed the lives of many innocent Ugandans. Speaking at the event, Stanbic Black Pirates Head Coach Mervin Odongo described Gongodyo as a committed player whose dedication and humility made him a role model to many.”

Sydney was more than a rugby player. He was family. He represented discipline, resilience and selflessness every time he stepped onto the field. Today, we are not only mourning a teammate but sending a clear message that no Ugandan should lose their life to mob justice. Justice belongs to the courts, not to angry crowds,” Odongo said.

Journalist Moses Echodu also Executive Director of Uganda Child Cancer Foundation urged communities to embrace peaceful ways of resolving disputes. “Rugby teaches respect, discipline and teamwork. Those are the same values we want society to embrace. Sydney’s death is a painful reminder that mob justice destroys lives, families and communities. We call upon every Ugandan to reject violence and allow the law to take its course,” the representative said.

As one of the long-standing supporters of Ugandan rugby, Stanbic Bank Uganda joined the fraternity in honouring Gongodyo’s legacy and advocating for safer communities.

Speaking on behalf of the bank, Marketing Manager Diana Kahunde reaffirmed Stanbic’s commitment to initiatives that promote unity, justice and community development.

“For 35 years, Stanbic Bank has stood alongside Ugandans in driving growth and building stronger communities. Today, we stand with the rugby fraternity to honour Sydney’s memory and remind everyone that every life matters. Together, we can build a society where disagreements are resolved peacefully and justice is left to the institutions mandated to uphold it,” Kahunde said.

The walk also resonated with ordinary rugby enthusiasts who turned up in large numbers to show solidarity with Gongodyo’s family and teammates. Daniel Abaasa, a rugby supporter who participated in the procession, said the campaign should inspire Ugandans to rethink how they respond to crime and suspicion.

“Sydney’s story could have been anyone’s story. That’s why I joined this walk. Mob justice has no winners it only leaves families grieving. I hope today’s message reaches every Ugandan that no one has the right to take another person’s life,” Abaasa said. Throughout the walk, participants repeatedly chanted “Sydney Is Me”, symbolising that anyone could become a victim of mob violence. The campaign is intended to spark a nationwide conversation on the dangers of mob justice while encouraging citizens to trust the country’s justice system.

The event concluded with a candle-light tribute and a minute of silence in Gongodyo’s memory as participants pledged to continue advocating for justice, compassion and respect for human life.

  • Govt unveils Shs14.2 Billion Hoima Water Project to boost supply ahead of AFCON 2027

Govt unveils Shs14.2 Billion Hoima Water Project to boost supply ahead of AFCON 2027

Kampala: The Government of Uganda through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has unveiled a 14.24 billion shilling water project for Hoima City, aimed at boosting supply ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

NWSC Managing Director Dr. Mugisha announced the project Tuesday during a media briefing at the corporation’s headquarters in Nakasero, saying it forms part of government’s strategic investment in critical infrastructure ahead of the tournament and to support the continued growth of the Albertine Region as Uganda’s oil and gas hub.

Hoima is among the Ugandan cities selected to host tournament matches, alongside Kampala and Lira, as the country co-hosts the continental showpiece with Kenya and Tanzania from June to July 2027.

The project will draw raw water from the River Kafu in Kikuube District, treat it at a new conventional water treatment plant, and transmit it to Hoima City through a bulk water transfer system, Dr. Mugisha said. It will deliver a treatment plant with capacity to produce 2,000 cubic meters of water daily, about 25 kilometers of transmission and distribution pipelines, and a 300-cubic-meter elevated steel reservoir at Musaijamukulu hill, along with associated pumping, electrical and storage infrastructure.

Dr. Mugisha said the project, designated Hoima 2, is meant to augment the existing Hoima 1 system, which has served the city for years but can no longer meet demand amid rapid urbanization, population growth and rising industrial activity linked to the oil and gas sector.

“The current system is no longer sufficient to adequately meet the water needs of Hoima City and its surrounding areas,” he said, calling Hoima 2 an urgent intervention to bridge the supply gap in the short to medium term.

He said government and NWSC are also finalizing designs for a longer-term Hoima 3 Water Supply System, which would substantially expand water production, transmission and storage capacity, and that the two systems would eventually be integrated into a unified network for greater efficiency and resilience.

“NWSC, therefore, appeals to government to make available the required funding for implementation of the Hoima 3 Water Supply System immediately upon completion of the designs,” Dr. Mugisha said. “Timely investment in Hoima 3 will secure the long-term water future of Hoima City and support Uganda’s broader economic transformation agenda.”

The current project is jointly funded by the Government of Uganda and NWSC and is expected to take eight months to complete.

The works are being carried out by Zhonghao Overseas Construction Engineering Company Limited. Dr. Mugisha tasked the contractor to deliver the project within time and cost, warning that delays would not be tolerated.

“Time delays will not be acceptable,” he said.

Zhonghao Overseas Construction Engineering Company Limited was represented at the briefing by Managing Director Ma Yongqian and Deputy Managing Director Wang Feifei. The contractor committed to delivering the project within cost and time, and pledged to maintain quality standards throughout construction.

The firm also pledged close collaboration with local content requirements, saying it would mobilize local manpower during implementation to boost the economic wellbeing of communities in Hoima.

Dr. Mugisha said the project will improve the reliability and quality of Hoima’s water supply, reduce shortages in parts of the city, support urban growth and industrialization, and strengthen the region’s readiness for AFCON 2027.

  • How Airtel Masaza Cup Built Kitara FC’s Goal Machine, Jimmy Kalema

How Airtel Masaza Cup Built Kitara FC’s Goal Machine, Jimmy Kalema

At only 23 years, Jimmy Kalema has already built an impressive football CV. The lethal striker for Bunyoro region-based Kitara FC has won two Masaza Cup titles, a Golden Boot, multiple individual accolades, scored the winning goal that secured Kitara FC’s second Stanbic Uganda Cup title, and many other milestones.

Kalema’s journey from the dusty playgrounds of Kiboga to the national spotlight stands as one of the strongest testimonies to the transformative power of the the Airtel Masaza Cup. Born and raised in Kiboga by Teopista Birungi and the late Ben Kimuli, Kalema’s football talent manifested at an early age.

Interestingly, he did not begin his career as a striker. While in primary school, he joined a football academy where he initially played as a left back. However, one of his coaches quickly identified his attacking instincts and converted him into a forward, a decision that redefined his football career. Kalema attended St. Andrews Primary School in Kiboga before joining St. Paul Kyamutwe, popularly known as Rock Base. He later completed his primary education at St. Balikuddembe Primary School, a government-aided institution in Kyankwanzi District.

He later joined Kiboga United FC to play in the FUFA Regional League, where he scored 11 goals while still in Senior Two at Light Secondary School and later Vienna Secondary School. His performance caught the attention of Buddo Secondary School, where he joined for S.3 and S.4 under the guidance of coach Simon Peter Mugerwa. While Kalema was in Senior Three at Buddo, Mugerwa was appointed head coach of Busiro County for the 2022 Masaza Cup tournament.

Confident in his young striker’s ability, he included Kalema in the squad, an opportunity he utilized so well. “I looked at this as a big opportunity, and I set myself a target of scoring at least four goals in the tournament. I surpassed my target and scored five goals, contributing to Busiro’s first Masaza Cup title in 18 years,” Kalema recalls.

Following Busiro’s victory, Kalema moved to Mawokota for the 2023 edition of the tournament. Although things did not go entirely as planned, the team managed a third-place finish. The following season, in 2024, he crossed to Buweekula County, where he scored four goals and helped the team secure another bronze medal finish. His impressive performances earned him a return to Buweekula for the 2025 edition.

Knowing it would likely be his final appearance in the Masaza Cup, Kalema decided to leave an unforgettable mark on the tournament. At the end of the competition, he helped Buweekula win its first Masaza Cup title since 2004, emerged the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, netted 7 goals and won the Golden Boot. While Kalema focused on improving his finishing ability, scouts from Kitara FC had already identified him as a special talent. His pace, movement, and ability to torment defenders made him impossible to ignore.Soon after the final, Kalema signed a two-year contract with Kitara FC.

Within a few months of joining the club, he scored the winning goal against Sports Club Villa to secure Kitara’s second Stanbic Uganda Cup title in three years. “I played my last games for Buweekula while we were already in talks with Kitara FC. By the time I finished the final against Ssingo, my contract with Kitara was almost complete,” he says. Kalema reveals that his decision to join Kitara was largely influenced by the prospect of getting regular playing time, an opportunity he says the club has provided. Despite interest from other top clubs, including Express FC and URA FC, he believed Kitara offered the best environment for his growth. He credits the Masaza Cup for giving him the platform to shine and further develop his talent.

“The Masaza Cup has not only given me an opportunity to exhibit my talent, but it has also helped me improve through the guidance from coaches and fellow players. I strongly believe the tournament continues to bring many young players into the spotlight, just like it did for me,” he says.

Kalema now dreams of representing the Uganda Cranes and eventually securing a professional move abroad. He believes achieving those goals is simply a matter of continued hard work and patience. He advises young footballers to focus on developing their talent first if they are to go far in football.

“My fellow players need to work hard and build their careers first instead of chasing money. You can get money and it gets finished, but without good performance, you cannot earn more of it,” he says.

Kalema’s success story is just one among many produced by the Airtel Masaza Cup. Over the years, the competition has nurtured numerous players who have gone on to feature in Uganda’s top-flight league, represent the Uganda Cranes, and secure professional contracts abroad.

Other notable beneficiaries include Hassan Mubiru of Butambala, who recently joined Azam FC in Tanzania from Sports Club Villa, Yunus Ssentamu, Nicholas Kabonge, Emma Okwi, and Farouk Miya, who helped Mawokota win the Masaza Cup in 2012 before captaining the Uganda Cranes and scoring the historic goal that returned Uganda to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 after a 39-year absence.

The Buganda Kingdom Premier, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, says talent development is a key priority in Masaza tournament, which has given many players a chance to showcase their abilities before going on to fly the national flag. He commends the competition for empowering youth with valuable opportunities while inspiring unity and progress.

“The Masaza Cup offers employment, builds unity and brings in revenue. It is a true platform for talent and transformation,” Mayiga says.David Birungi, the Manager, Communications and Corporate at Airtel Uganda who are the premium sponsors for the cup says the company’s 13-year sponsorship of the Masaza Cup has yielded significant results in talent development.”

For the years Airtel has supported the Masaza Cup, we have seen many talented players progress to the national team and professional clubs abroad. We remain committed to investing in the tournament to continue producing talent that contributes to the growth of Ugandan football,” Birungi says.

Launched in 2004 and first won by Gomba, the Masaza Cup continues to identify and nurture more young talents, empower youth, and promote cultural identity and unity in Uganda and beyond. For Jimmy Kalema, the Airtel Masaza Cup was more than just a competition. It was the stage that transformed a talented youngster from Kiboga into one of Uganda’s brightest emerging strikers, a powerful reminder of what can happen when raw talent is given the opportunity to shine.

Conrad Wanyama displays some of the gifts

The occasion felt more like a celebration than an ordinary league fixture, with teammates, fans, and club officials paying tribute to one of the club’s most loyal and influential players since his debut during the 2016/17 season.

Wanyama received a heroic salute after the final whistle in recognition of his immense contribution to the club over the years, having become one of the defining figures within the Pirates setup both on and off the field.

Diana Kahunde, the acting Manager for Marketing and Communications at Stanbic Bank, congratulated Wanyama on reaching this career milestone. She described it as a reflection of dedication and resilience; values that align closely with the Stanbic current ‘Keep Growing’ campaign.

“At Stanbic Bank, our purpose is clear ‘Uganda is our home, we drive her growth.’ We are proud to support the Black Pirates and celebrate not just Wanyama’s milestone, but also the club’s ability to nurture and grow players whose commitment continues to inspire the next generation of Ugandan sports talent both on and off the field,” Kahunde said.

Pirates Tighten Grip on Top Spot

The Stanbic Black Pirates delivered a ruthless performance, overpowering Walukuba with pace, physicality, and tactical discipline. Despite early pressure from the visitors and a heavy afternoon downpour, the Bweyogerere-based side remained composed, quickly settling into rhythm and dominating possession. The Pirates converted defensive pressure into attacking opportunities, producing a flurry of tries that left Walukuba struggling to recover.

The emphatic win leaves the Pirates firmly at the top of the table with 47 points, narrowly ahead of Kobs Rugby Club who sit second with 45 points, while Buffaloes occupy third place with 41 points. With the title race tightening, every result is proving crucial as the season enters its decisive stages.

Saturday’s clash also marked the return of several key players, including Nathan, Sydney, Tashobya, Shimwa, and Roy, whose comeback added depth and experience to the squad.

Their return was evident in the team’s intensity and control, particularly in key phases of the game where the Pirates looked sharper and more balanced as they continue preparations for the Enterprise Cup finals against Kabras Sugar in Nairobi, Kenya.

Alex Aturinda capped off an impressive performance by walking away with the Man of the Match accolade.

  • dfcu Walk Calls for Greater Support for Uganda’s Sickle Cell Warriors

dfcu Walk Calls for Greater Support for Uganda’s Sickle Cell Warriors

Kampala: dfcu Bank, in partnership with Mulago National Referral Hospital and Mengo Hospital, hosted the “Hope in Motion” Walk for Sickle Cell, bringing together hundreds of Ugandans in a united call for increased awareness, screening, blood donation and stronger support for families and individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease.

The walk drew participation from dfcu staff, corporate leaders, healthcare professionals, caregivers, Sickle Cell warriors, volunteers and government officials, turning the streets of Kampala into a powerful show of solidarity and hope for thousands of families affected by the disease across Uganda.

The initiative forms part of dfcu Bank’s ongoing sustainability and community outreach efforts as the Bank marks 62 years of impact in Uganda. It also builds on the support being extended through the dfcu – Rotary Uganda Health Camps being carried out across the country to improve access to community health services and interventions.

Uganda continues to carry one of the highest Sickle Cell burdens globally, with an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 babies born with the condition annually. Nearly 20% of Ugandans are believed to carry the Sickle Cell trait, with prevalence remaining especially high in parts of Northern Uganda. For many families, the disease brings repeated pain crises, hospital visits, emotional strain and financial hardship.

dfcu Bank’s journey in supporting the Sickle Cell community began in 2024 during the Bank’s 60th Anniversary celebrations through the “60 Acts of Kindness” campaign, a staff-led nationwide initiative focused on health, education and community outreach. The visit exposed staff to the daily realities faced by Sickle Cell warriors, caregivers and healthcare workers and sparked a deeper commitment by the Bank to support awareness and patient care initiatives.

Speaking during the event, Helena Mayanja, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at dfcu Bank, said the initiative reflects the Bank’s commitment to improving lives and supporting communities beyond banking. “Our involvement in the Sickle Cell journey started during dfcu’s 60th Anniversary through the dfcu staff-led 60 Acts of Kindness campaign. What began as a simple outreach to the Mulago Sickle Cell wards opened our eyes to the realities many families face daily. We interacted with warriors, caregivers and health workers and realised there was need for sustained support and awareness,” she said.

Mayanja added that the “Hope in Motion” Walk was organised to continue building awareness while mobilising support for improved patient care and facilities at the Mulago National Referral Hospital Sickle Cell Clinic. “Today, we are raising awareness, promoting Sickle Cell screening and encouraging blood donation. Our initial objective was to refurbish the sanitary facilities at the Sickle Cell Clinic in Mulago, which serves over 200 people daily. We set out to raise funding for this purpose, but generous contributions from dfcu staff have already surpassed our set goal,” she said.

The Chief Walker, Dr. Rosemary Byanyima, Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital, described the initiative as a meaningful intervention that continues to bring hope to families living with Sickle Cell Disease. She noted that many children living with the condition experience recurring pain crises, anaemia, infections and other life-threatening complications that affect education and place financial strain on families.

She welcomed the Ministry of Health’s recent launch of mandatory newborn screening for Sickle Cell Disease, describing it as a major milestone in strengthening early diagnosis and reducing severe complications among affected children. She also emphasised the importance of sustained government support to ensure continued access to treatment for patients across the country. Also present at the walk was Hon. David Bahati, Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (Industry), who applauded dfcu Bank for using its anniversary celebrations to create meaningful community impact while drawing national attention to Sickle Cell Disease, which continues to affect thousands of Ugandan families across the country.

“I commend dfcu Bank for stepping forward to support such an important national cause. Sickle Cell Disease continues to affect many families across Uganda, yet awareness and support remain limited. Initiatives like the ‘Hope in Motion’ Walk help bring visibility, encourage screening and mobilise communities to stand together in support of patients and caregivers. This is the kind of corporate leadership that creates lasting impact beyond business,” he said.

Dr. Philip Kasirye, Consultant Paediatrician and Blood Specialist at Mulago National Referral Hospital, noted that Mulago hosts the oldest and largest Sickle Cell care centre in Uganda, established in 1968, and commended ongoing efforts to decentralise Sickle Cell care services to regional referral hospitals and district health facilities nationwide.

Through the “Hope in Motion” Walk, dfcu Bank says it hopes to turn awareness into action by supporting improved healthcare facilities, increasing blood donation, encouraging early screening and strengthening support systems for Uganda’s Sickle Cell community.
