Kacungira and Katutsi crowned Stanbic Match Play Champions as Bank Renews Entebbe Golf Partnership

Entebbe: Sam Kacungira and Vincent Katutsi produced a stunning comeback during a dramatic sudden-death playoff to win the 2026 Stanbic Entebbe Match Play Championship, with the bank announcing a renewal of its sponsorship partnership with this prestigious tournament. The duo defeated former finalists Richard Mwami and Tony Kisadha on the 21st hole emerging as winners in one the most thrilling finals in the tournament’s history. It brought to a close five months of often fierce competition that attracted some of the country’s finest amateur golfers.

Played over the par-71 lakeside course at Entebbe Golf Club, the championship match swung dramatically between the two pairs. Kacungira and Katutsi established early control and went 2-up after the ninth hole, but Mwami and Kisadha mounted a spirited comeback, gradually erasing the deficit and taking the lead heading into the closing holes. With defeat looming, Kacungira produced a brilliant shot on the 18th hole to force the contest into sudden death. The playoff extended over three extra holes before Kacungira and Katutsi secured the decisive victory on the 21st hole, claiming their maiden Stanbic Match Play title.

The victory earned the champions a premium winners’ package that includes a fully paid trip to the DP Tour Championship in Dubai, a Stanbic Infinite Card, a free UGX investment account with an initial deposit of UGX500,000, and Stanbic MediProtect insurance cover for the whole year, among other rewards from partners including Johnnie Walker and CFAO Motors.

The second and third placed winners received a pair of air tickets to Johannesburg and Mombasa respectfully courtesy of Uganda Airlines.

Speaking after the victory, Sam Kacungira described their win as the biggest achievement of his golfing career. “This was one of the toughest matches we have ever played. We had the momentum early, then lost it, and had to fight our way back. The 18th hole gave us a second chance, and we knew we could not waste it,” he said. His playing partner Vincent Katutsi credited teamwork and resilience for the victory. He acknowledged the fact they were facing a very strong team that had even reached the finals in the 2024 matchplay but only to get beaten by the ladies duo of Lillian Koowe/Joyce Kisembo.

Katutsi said, “Richard and Tony are outstanding golfers, and they pushed us all the way. We stayed patient, trusted each other, and kept believing even when we were behind. This victory means a lot to us because of the quality of the competition and the history of this tournament.”

Mwami said the final showcased the quality and competitiveness of Ugandan golf. “We gave everything we had and came very close. Sometimes golf is decided by a single shot, and today they executed better in the playoff. We congratulate Sam and Vincent, because they earned the victory,” he said.

During the awards ceremony, Ronald Makata, Chief Financial Officer of Stanbic Bank Uganda, congratulated both teams for delivering a final worthy of the tournament’s stature. Makata also announced that Stanbic Bank Uganda will renew its sponsorship partnership with the Entebbe Match Play Tournament, reaffirming the bank’s long-term commitment to the competition and the broader golfing community.

“While we enjoy this wonderful game on this beautiful course, we are also conscious of the wider responsibility we have to the communities around us. At Stanbic, we are asking ourselves how we can use the green to create opportunities beyond the green,” Makata said.

He said Uganda continues to face challenges including youth unemployment, climate vulnerability, and livelihood constraints, but also presents enormous opportunities for growth and transformation. Makata said Stanbic, which is celebrating 35 years of operations in Uganda, is focusing on using strategic partnerships to drive inclusive economic growth.

“We are in it for the long game. This renewed partnership reflects our belief that sport can build relationships, create opportunities, and contribute to a more prosperous society,” he said.Through implementation of the Positive Impact Agenda, the bank has committed to investing up to UGX 1 trillion through strategic partnerships by 2028, with a focus on financial inclusion, job creation, climate resilience, and livelihood opportunities for women, youth, and farmers. The finals also featured two debutants against two experienced finalists. Kacungira and Katutsi reached the championship match after defeating Ronald Pulle and Michael Monne 5&4, while Mwami and Kisadha advanced after a hard-fought victory over Brian Manyindo and Mark Musinguzi on the second extra hole.

  • KCB Bank Uganda joins National Call to End Malaria at Parliamentary Malaria Walk

KCB Bank Uganda joins National Call to End Malaria at Parliamentary Malaria Walk

Kampala: Thousands of Ugandans from Parliament, government ministries, development partners, civil society, the private sector and local communities came together over the weekend for the 2026 Parliamentary Malaria Walk, united by a common goal of accelerating the fight against malaria and ending preventable deaths caused by the disease.

Among the organisations that took part was KCB Bank Uganda, whose staff joined the nationwide campaign to raise awareness, advocate for increased investment in malaria prevention and treatment, and demonstrate the private sector’s commitment to improving public health outcomes.

Held under the theme “No One Should Die of Malaria,” this year’s walk highlighted the urgent need for stronger collaboration in tackling a disease that continues to disproportionately affect children under five, pregnant women and vulnerable communities. Participants also called for greater public awareness, increased access to prevention tools and sustained investment in healthcare systems.

Despite years of progress, malaria remains Uganda’s leading cause of illness, accounting for an estimated 30–40 percent of outpatient visits and up to 20 percent of hospital admissions every year. The disease continues to place enormous pressure on families, healthcare facilities and the country’s economy, making collective action more important than ever.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, who served as the Chief Walker, called for a united national response to malaria, noting that the disease continues to undermine the health and education of Uganda’s children.

“Malaria remains one of the greatest threats to our nation’s future because it continues to keep our children out of school and places an enormous burden on families and our health system. Ending malaria requires all of us as government, the private sector, development partners, and communities to work together to strengthen prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the bank, Noela Byuma, Head of Marketing and Communications at KCB Bank Uganda, said the fight against malaria requires every sector of society to play its part. “Malaria is an economic and social issue that affects families, businesses and the nation’s productivity. At KCB Bank Uganda, we believe that sustainable development begins with healthy communities. We are proud to stand alongside Parliament, government, development partners and fellow corporate organisations in supporting efforts to eliminate malaria. Every step we take today represents hope for healthier families and a stronger Uganda.”The Bank’s participation reflects its broader commitment to creating lasting social impact, like its bank promise, For People For Better, through partnerships that improve health, education, environmental sustainability and economic empowerment. By supporting initiatives such as the Parliamentary Malaria Walk, KCB Bank Uganda continues to contribute to national efforts aimed at building healthier and more resilient communities.

Now in its annual calendar of national advocacy events, the Parliamentary Malaria Walk continues to serve as an important platform for mobilising action against one of Uganda’s biggest public health challenges, bringing together stakeholders to champion a future where no Ugandan dies from a preventable mosquito bite.

  • Independence Marathon For Safe Motherhood Gets UGX 200M Boost from Stanbic Bank

Independence Marathon For Safe Motherhood Gets UGX 200M Boost from Stanbic Bank

Kampala: Stanbic Bank Uganda has announced a UGX 200 million support package for the second edition of the Independence Marathon, a national run dedicated to raising awareness on maternal and newborn deaths and channeling proceeds towards strengthening select health centres to improve maternal care.

This contribution underscores Stanbic’s longstanding commitment to advancing the health and wellbeing of mothers across Uganda. Organized under the banner of  “save a mother”, the Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, and proceeds will be directed towards strengthening maternal health services at Mengo Hospital.

The initiative brings together the private sector, government, development partners and the public in a united effort to tackle one of Uganda’s most urgent health challenges: preventable maternal deaths.

Speaking during the launch hosted at Old Mutual Nakawa Business Park, Lois Kwikiriza, Senior Marketing Manager at Stanbic Bank Uganda said the support is part of activities to mark 35 years of driving Uganda’s socioeconomic transformation.

“For three and a half decades, we have invested in people, businesses and communities because Uganda is Our Home and we are committed to driving her growth,” she said. “As the Independence Marathon evolves into a national movement, it offers a powerful platform to raise awareness and mobilise resources for safe motherhood — a priority area within Stanbic’s corporate social investment and positive impact agenda for women, youth, and farmers. We are proud to partner with the organisers to help protect mothers and strengthen maternal care across Uganda.”

Working with the Ministry of Health and the Corporate Society for Safe Motherhood, Stanbic and partners have supported more than 80 health facilities across Uganda with infrastructure upgrades, medical equipment and maternal health interventions.

“Every mother deserves the opportunity to give birth safely,” Kwikiriza said .Uganda records approximately 189 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, with nearly 60 per cent linked to postpartum haemorrhage — a largely preventable condition with timely care, skilled personnel and adequate equipment.

Dr.Ruth Grace Kakoba, Technical Advisor Maternal Newborn Health for Ministry of Health, noted that safe motherhood means that a pregnancy should be attainable, safe and enjoyable.

“Safe motherhood has different pillars, one of which is communication for safe motherhood and community engagement through health care. It can not over emphasized. We must do anything to ensure mothers deliver safely. She further urged women to go to hospitals for safe delivery to avoid bleeding.

“When a woman starts bleeding, she has a loop of just ten minutes to save her life, so knowing that means it is not safe at all to give birth at home because she is at a high risk of losing her life.”

Dr. Ruth also appreciated the different partners like Stanbic Bank, Old Mutual, TMR International Hospital, Nivana and I-Marathon team for organizing a run to rally behind safe motherhood.Antony Mutyabule, Business Transformation Manager at Old Mutual Uganda, said the company’s partnership reflects a shared commitment to healthier lifestyles and stronger families.

“Through our Thrive Digital Wellness platform, we are equipping Ugandans with practical tools to build healthier habits and stay motivated on their wellness journey. We are proud to support a cause that inspires positive lifestyle choices while saving mothers’ lives,” he said.

Stephen Beyanga, Hospital Administrator at TMR International Hospital, said that through the TMR Golden Living App, participants will be encouraged to continue their wellness journey, access online consultations, use the emergency button for rapid assistance, follow up on identified health risks, and remain engaged after the marathon.

“TMR International Hospital will support the event through medical personnel, emergency response services, health education and selected wellness screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, lipid profile, body mass index and heart rate assessments.”

He added that TMR is proud to continue its partnership with the Independence Marathon as the Medical Partner, using the event to promote safe motherhood, voluntary blood donation, wellness and the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Robert Kabushenga said the Independence Marathon was conceived to create a world class road race for Uganda while giving citizens a meaningful way to celebrate independence. “This year’s marathon will offer an enhanced experience, with Mandela National Stadium serving as both the start and finish point, and the Northern Bypass providing a professionally managed and timed race route,” he said.

“We are grateful to partners like Stanbic Bank, Old Mutual and TMR for believing in this vision and helping us build what we hope will become Uganda’s premier marathon.”

Last year’s inaugural marathon attracted thousands of runners nationwide and, together with proceeds from the Stanbic sponsored Entebbe Match Play Series, contributed to improving healthcare services at Entebbe Regional Hospital. Organisers are optimistic that this year’s expanded partnerships will mobilise even more Ugandans to run — not only for fitness, but to help save mothers’ lives.

  • How Airtel Masaza Cup Built Farouk Miya’s Confidence

How Airtel Masaza Cup Built Farouk Miya’s Confidence

In front of Crowds Famously known to fans as Muyizzi Tasubwa (a hunter who never misses), Farouk Miya has his name written on the wall of fame for Uganda’s football GOATs (Greatest of all times). At 28, he is Uganda Cranes’ third all-time leading scorer with 24 goals, behind only Majid Musisi (35) and Emma Okwi (28). Despite playing for big clubs in Europe and representing the national team on big stages, Miya attributes part of his success to Airtel Masaza Cup.

Ugandans will forever remember him for the decisive strike against Comoros that ended the country’s 39 year wait for qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations. For Miya, that unforgettable moment was built on the confidence he developed while playing before packed crowds in the Airtel Masaza Cup with Mawokota FC in 2013.

Born in Kampala to Aisha Mutesi, a matron at Kyambogo University, and the late Yusuf Muhammad, Miya’s football journey began when his talent caught the attention of Dr Eddie Butindo, a lecturer at Kyambogo University and a friend to Miya’s mother.

While Butindo was coaching the Kyambogo girls’ football team, he invited Miya to train with them, just for fun. To his surprise, Miya blended well. He later introduced him to the Kampala Kids League while he was still a pupil at Gombe Primary School. Although his ability was evident from an early age, Miya admits football was never his biggest priority.“I always played football for fun, but people kept telling me I had talent. My father was a lecturer and always encouraged me to concentrate on my books rather than football,” he recalls.

Butindo took Miya to Gombe SS where he was denied a bursary. He later took him to Bulo Parents Secondary School in Butambala, where he put up an outstanding performance when his school drew against St Mary’s Secondary School Kitende in Buganda Schools Championship. This stellar performance earned him a slot at Kitende while in S.3. For Miya, joining Kitende meant competing alongside established school stars, including then captain Eddie Mubiru. However, his versatility quickly made him indispensable.“I could play as an attacking midfielder, winger, number ten, holding midfielder, even in defence. That flexibility helped me break into the first team” he says.

While at Kitende, his coach Edward Golola, who had been appointed head coach of Mawokota FC invited him to be part of the team. Initially reluctant because of his academic commitments, Miya eventually accepted the invitation out of respect for Golola and because Kitende director Dr Lawrence Mulindwa hailed from Mawokota.

However, Miya’s academic focus didn’t allow him to stay in the camp throughout the tournament. He would receive permission to leave school two days before matches, join the team for training, play the game and return immediately. Miya’s Mawokota FC reached Masaza Cup finals with Ssingo, where he struck a dramatic late freekick winner to hand Mawokota a historic 1-0 victory at Nakivubo Stadium before a packed crowd in presence of Kabaka Mutebi.

“That victory still feels fresh. Scoring the winning goal against Ssingo in the presence of the Kabaka was unforgettable. Getting the chance to shake his hand while receiving my medal remains one of the proudest moments in my career.” Says Miya.

After a successful season at Masaza, Miya returned to Kitende for studies, which he had already helped win back to back Copa Coca-Cola National Schools Championships in 2012 and 2013. His performance soon earned him a move to his school-affiliated Vipers Sports Club during his Senior Six vacation, where he played for one season and led them to an unbeaten league title, finished as the league’s Most Valuable Player after netting 11 goals and seven assists. This success secured him a slot at the national team, and a record US$400,000 transfer to Belgian giants Standard Liege.

For Miya, the biggest achievement from the Airtel Masaza Cup was not a medal or a trophy, but the confidence to deliver results before large crowds. “Playing before thousands of passionate fans in the Masaza Cup prepared me for the national team. The atmosphere is unique because supporters come in numbers, deeply loyal to their counties. That experience gave me confidence to deliver results in front of big crowds, something many who haven’t played in the tournament miss,” He says.

Miya believes that the same explains why some talented footballers excel at club level but struggle on the international stage.“Some players have the talent and quality, but find it difficult to handle the pressure that comes with playing for the national team. The Masaza Cup helped me overcome that fear,” He adds.

That confidence has followed him throughout a career that has taken him across Europe and Asia. After Standard Liege, Miya featured for Royal Excel Mouscron in Belgium, Sabail FK in Azerbaijan, FC Lviv in Ukraine, Konyaspor and Caykur Rizespor in Turkey, and now Ilioupoli FC in Greece.

Miya credits Airtel for creating platforms that transformed his career, from Airtel Rising Stars, where he represented the Buganda Region and St Mary’s Kitende, to the Airtel Masaza Cup where he scored eight goals and helped Mawokota lift their third title. Miya believes the tournament remains one of Uganda’s most important talent development pathways, and he wants to see it receive even greater exposure through broadcasts.

“The Masaza Cup continues to produce players for the Uganda Premier League and the national team. If matches are broadcast live, more fans will support the game, even more young players will be inspired to dream big.”

As he prepares for AFCON 2027, following his historic return to Vipers after 10 years, Miya believes the confidence he first developed in the Airtel Masaza Cup continues to shape his performances today. He urges young players to work hard, be disciplined and believe in themselves, which is the beginning of every successful football career.
