  • KCB KOBs cross the Border for a Battle of the KCBs

KCB KOBs cross the Border for a Battle of the KCBs

Uganda’s 13-time champions face KCB Rugby in a cross-border showdown that brings two sides, one name, and a shared passion for rugby onto the same stage

There is a familiar name on both sides of this East African rugby contest. The difference will be decided on the pitch. KCB KOBs will cross the border into Kenya on 3rd October 2026 to take on KCB Rugby at KCB Sports Club, Ruaraka, at 3:00 p.m., in a meeting of two clubs linked by the KCB name and united by the same hunger to win.

The cross-border contest will then return to Uganda on 24th October 2026, when KCB KOBs will host KCB Rugby at Kampala Grounds (formerly Legends Ground), allowing Ugandan supporters to witness the second leg on home soil. For KOBs, the trip comes at a timely moment. The Blue Army recently ended a two-year wait for a Uganda Rugby 7s Series stop title, fighting back from 19-5 down at halftime to beat Rams RFC 22-19 in the Kyabazinga 7s final. It was the kind of comeback that can change the mood around a team, and KCB KOBs will be hoping to carry that belief across the border.

But if the Ugandans arrive with renewed confidence, they know they will face a KCB Rugby side accustomed to the demands of high-level Kenyan rugby. That is what makes this encounter particularly interesting. The two clubs may share a sponsor and a name, but once the whistle goes, there will be no room for familiarity.

For KCB Bank Uganda, the fixture is another chapter in a partnership that has grown considerably since the bank joined hands with KOBs in 2023. The partnership gave KCB naming rights to the club and saw the side take on the KCB KOBs identity, creating a visible connection between the bank and one of Uganda’s most historic rugby clubs. KOBs, founded in 1963, have won 13 Premiership titles and remain one of the country’s most decorated rugby sides. What started as a sponsorship has since developed into a longer-term relationship centered on keeping the club competitive and supporting its ambitions. In 2025, KCB Bank Uganda renewed and increased its support to UGX195 million, including funding for a new playing kit and support towards the club’s operations. The bank has continued to position the partnership around sport, community and the development of talent. That makes Saturday’s meeting particularly fitting. On one side will be KCB KOBs, carrying the KCB name into Kenya.

On the other will be KCB Rugby, the Kenyan club carrying that same name on home soil.It is a meeting that illustrates how sport can create connections that go beyond borders while still giving supporters exactly what they want: a competitive rugby match.

For KCB KOBs, the challenge will be to match the physicality and pace of their Kenyan opponents while maintaining the discipline that has helped them rediscover their winning touch. Their recent Kyabazinga 7s victory showed that this is a team capable of fighting when the odds turn against it. After trailing Rams by 14 points at the break, the team found another gear in the second half to complete the comeback and lift the trophy. That resilience will be valuable in Kenya.

Cross-border fixtures offer players a different kind of test. The atmosphere is different, the pressure is different, and there is always an added desire to prove that Ugandan rugby can stand toe-to-toe with its neighbours.KCB KOBs have already had a taste of that this year through the return of the Enterprise Cup, where Ugandan clubs faced Kenyan opposition in a competition designed to strengthen competition and connections between the two rugby communities. Now they have another opportunity, and this time, there is an added storyline. They are not simply travelling to Kenya to play a Kenyan club, but they will be coming face to face with a fellow KCB-backed side. That should make for an intriguing battle.

For the bank, the result will matter, but so will the bigger picture: seeing a Ugandan club compete on a regional stage, giving players exposure to a different level of competition and strengthening a partnership that has continued to grow since 2023. As for the rugby club, the message will be much simpler.

Take the trip, take the hits, play the game, and come home with the bragging rights because when KCB KOBs meet KCB Rugby, the jerseys may carry the same name, but for 80 minutes, there will be only one thing that matters. Who wins the battle on the pitch?

  • 7 Ways Content Piracy is Reshaping Africa’s Entertainment Industry

7 Ways Content Piracy is Reshaping Africa’s Entertainment Industry

Piracy is no longer simply a fight over copyright. It is changing how audiences consume content, how creators are funded and how platforms protect and distribute what they produce. For Africa’s growing entertainment industry, that makes piracy more than a legal or enforcement challenge. It is increasingly shaping the economics, technology and future of the creative sector. From illegal streaming and unauthorised redistribution to sophisticated piracy networks operating across borders, the threat has evolved alongside the digital entertainment economy.

Partners Against Piracy (PAP) brings together broadcasters, content creators, regulators and law enforcement to tackle the problem through enforcement, education and industry collaboration. The scale of the problem is forcing the entertainment industry to adapt in seven important ways.

Audiences are changing how they consume content: The days of copied DVDs have given way to something far more convenient: digital access on demand. Illegal streams and downloads can now sit alongside legitimate entertainment services, competing on convenience, accessibility and immediacy.

For legitimate platforms, this means the challenge is no longer simply convincing audiences that piracy is illegal. It is about making legal content accessible, compelling and easy to consume.

Piracy is influencing what gets made: Content requires investment and investment depends on the expectation of a return. When legitimate platforms and rights holders lose revenue to piracy, the impact can extend to future commissioning decisions. For African producers, that can mean fewer opportunities to finance new films, series, documentaries and other local productions.

The impact reaches far beyond the screen: A production may appear to belong to the star on screen, but it represents an entire ecosystem of writers, directors, producers, editors, technicians, stylists and production crews. When content is pirated, the financial consequences can therefore reach far beyond the broadcaster or rights holder.

Partners Against Piracy and the MultiChoice Talent Factory recently put this human cost at the centre of a campaign produced by 14 young South African filmmakers, highlighting the people working behind the screen whose livelihoods depend on a sustainable creative industry.

Platforms are becoming technology companies as much as entertainment companies: Piracy is pushing legitimate platforms to invest heavily in technology, including AI-powered detection, forensic watermarking, automated monitoring and payment disruption.

MultiChoice, for example, has described using AI-powered intelligence to identify suspicious online activity and real-time detection to combat illegal live streams, alongside watermarking to trace pirated content. The result is a new technology arms race between legitimate platforms and increasingly sophisticated piracy networks.

Live sport has become a major piracy target: Few forms of entertainment illustrate the challenge better than live sport. A film can be watched tomorrow. A football match cannot and that makes major sporting events particularly attractive to illegal operators and means rights holders increasingly need to detect and disrupt piracy while the event is happening.

For broadcasters, the stakes extend beyond the broadcast itself. Sports rights underpin subscriptions, advertising, sponsorship and investment in broadcasting infrastructure.

Enforcement is becoming a collective effort: Digital piracy rarely respects borders. The operator, technology, payment system and audience can all be in different jurisdictions. That makes collaboration between broadcasters, technology companies, governments, regulators and law enforcement increasingly important.

Partners Against Piracy was established around this principle, bringing stakeholders together to address copyright protection, consumer education and enforcement. The scale of the response is significant. MultiChoice reported more than 155 anti-piracy raids, 4,351 illegal networks shut down and 107 arrests across Africa during FY25.

The future of African storytelling is at stake: Perhaps the biggest consequence of piracy is the hardest to measure: the stories that may never get made. Africa’s entertainment industries have enormous potential to create jobs, develop talent, build businesses and take African stories to global audiences. But that requires a functioning commercial ecosystem in which value flows back to the people creating the content. The question is whether audiences will support an ecosystem capable of continuing to produce African stories, music, sport and talent or whether increasing value will flow to networks distributing that content without paying for it.

Content piracy has evolved from a copyright problem into an industry-shaping force. It is changing audience behaviour, putting pressure on commissioning decisions, challenging the economics of local production and accelerating investment in content-protection technology.

Apple Music announces Kyle Simbwa As The Latest Up Next Artist In East Africa

Originally from Kasangati, a small town outside Kampala, Simbwa draws from ‘90s R&B and soul, ‘80s synth-pop, A.O.R., Disney TV, as well as the Afrobeats and Hip-Hop that shaped his teenage years. He blends these seemingly disparate influences into a distinctive Afrobeat/Alté sound that is entirely his own.

“Being selected for Up Next East Africa by Apple Music means a lot because I’m part of a generation of African artists building something uniquely ours. I want people to hear my music, feel where I’m from, and see how far it can travel,” Simbwa tells Apple Music. “2026 is about taking everything I’ve been building and pushing it further. Following the release of his debut project Person in 2025, he has continued to build a catalogue with singles including “Mwana Gwe,” “Love Me or Don’t,” and “East African Girl.” His growing live presence includes headline performances at Xpressions and appearances at Afro Urban alongside artists such as Mike Kayihura and Kohen Jaycee.

This year Simbwa ushers in a new chapter with East African Summer, a seven-track EP exploring love, nightlife, freedom, movement and the shared experiences shaping a new East African youth culture. Rooted in his Ugandan identity but influenced by a world of sounds, the project blends Afrobeats, R&B, Hip-Hop and alternative African sounds to capture the carefree moments, late nights, road trips and relationships that give an East African summer its distinct character.

As the newest Up Next artist in East Africa, Kyle Simbwa will be featured across Apple Music’s Up Next playlist https://apple.co/3eITdJd. The Race to the Finale Intensifies as 10 Housemates Advance in BBNaija Season 11

Big Brother Naija Season 11 took another unexpected turn this week as Barry used his Ultimate Veto Power to save every housemate from possible eviction, ensuring that all 10 contestants advance to the final week of the competition.

After winning Head of House last week, Barry was presented with an envelope this week containing two choices: save all the housemates, or save none, including the current Head of House, Keivo. He chose to save everyone, meaning there will be no public voting or eviction this week.

The decision means all 10 housemates are now guaranteed a place in the final week of the competition. The House was also filled with a mix of tears, laughter and excitement as Biggie surprised the housemates with heartfelt messages from their families. Aikou received a message from her sister, while Barry and Tram heard from their mothers.

Bluethopia, Flora, Keivo, Sheba and Ricky also received messages from their siblings, while Oyin and Temi Nkem heard from their fathers. The messages gave the housemates an emotional reminder of the people who have supported them throughout their journey and how far they have come since entering the House. With Barry’s reign coming to an end, Keivo emerged as this week’s Head of House, beating other housemates to secure the coveted title and its privileges for the week.

The theme for the week is Legacy Week, allowing the housemates to look back on their time in the competition, the experiences that have shaped them, and the mark they hope to leave behind.
