STUDIOCANAL Takes Record-Breaking Shaka iLembe: Zulu King to Global Audiences

STUDIOCANAL is bringing SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING, the record-breaking isiZulu-language drama to buyers outside Africa for the first time ahead of the International Market of Communications Programme (MIPCOM) 2026. The studio launched international sales at the market on October 1st, revealing a first look at season 3. SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING is South Africa’s most decorated and most watched drama series of all time. Produced by Bomb Productions for MultiChoice, a CANAL+ Company, SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING is the origin story of King Shaka kaSenzangakhona, told authentically, in isiZulu, by African filmmakers and historians.

Three series into its run, with the new series set to premiere soon in Africa, SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING arrives internationally as an established franchise, whose audience and critical reception have grown with each series.  Across its first two series, it has become the highest-rated drama in DStv’s history, the most-searched TV series in South Africa in 2023, and the record-holder for the most wins by a drama series in a single year at the SAFTAs, with 12 wins including Best Drama Series.

The series is executive produced by Desiree Markgraaff and Nomzamo Mbatha, who also stars as Queen Nandi. Season 3 picks up four years after the events of Series 2, with Shaka’s kingdom dominant across Southern Africa but facing new external pressure, including British expansion and growing European influence.

The story expands to include the emerging Basotho Kingdom of Moshoeshoe, King Faku’s Mpondo Kingdom and the settlement of Port Natal, with Queen Nandi and Shaka’s politically formidable aunt, Mkabayi, at its emotional centre.

Series 3 introduces to the cast Lerato Mvelase (Justice Served, Marked) as Queen Mpikase; Aiden Scott (One Piece) as Henry Francis Fynn, a British trader who becomes close to Shaka; Conrad Kemp (G20, Novocaine) as Lt. Francis Farewell; and Wonder Ndlovu (The Polygamist) as Prince Mpande.  Desireé Markgraaf, Executive Producer, said: “Making Shaka iLembe: Zulu King has been a journey of more than 12 years for the Bomb creative team. Our ambition was to tell this story with the scale, drama and epic sweep of world-class mainstream storytelling, while portraying the Africa we know and love with the dignity, complexity and humanity it deserves. Our partnership with M-Net, STUDIOCANAL, and CANAL+ has made this enormous undertaking possible. And we have been privileged to have the creative vision of Oscar-nominated director Angus Gibson guiding the series across all three seasons.”

Nomzamo Mbatha, Executive Producer and star of the show adds: “Shaka ILembe: Zulu King is proof of what African storytelling can achieve when it’s given the room to be ambitious, told at scale, and shared from the inside out. As an Executive Producer, I’m most proud of the series’ success at home and abroad, and of its real contribution to our creative economy. Portraying Queen Nandi, a woman whose courage helped build a kingdom and whose values still shape our understanding of the modern Zulu woman, has been an honour and a career highlight. None would be possible without the talent pool of gifted actors and directors I was fortunate enough to mold the character with.”

Anna Marsh, CEO of STUDIOCANAL, Chief Content Officer of CANAL+ comments “STUDIOCANAL is incredibly proud to bring SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING to MIPCOM. Our continued goal is to bring local stories to the world stage. Carried by an exceptional creative team this series speaks far beyond its borders; driven by world class storytelling, creative talent and authenticity the SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING franchise is a monumental achievement in television and one which must be celebrated for its deeply universal human portrayal of legendary figures. A groundbreaking production.”

Nomsa Philiso, Vice President, Content, CANAL+ Africa concludes “The international launch of Shaka iLembe: Zulu King marks an important moment not only for this extraordinary franchise, but for African storytelling as a whole. MultiChoice has spent decades investing in local stories because we believe cultural authenticity and global appeal are not opposing ideas; they are mutually reinforcing. Shaka iLembe demonstrates that the most powerful stories are often the most specific, and we are delighted to see this proudly African production find new audiences around the world.”

SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING has already expanded into francophone Africa via CANALAfrique+ MAGIC, delivering 24 episodes across its first two series, backed by MultiChoice’s largest single investment in a local production and over 20,000 jobs created across production. The series’ arrival marks the latest chapter in a run of premium, non-English-language dramas to find international audiences well beyond their domestic markets, though few have carried SHAKA ILEMBE: ZULU KING’s existing record of ratings and awards success. STUDIOCANAL will introduce international buyers to the franchise at MIPCOM 2026, with sales activity for Series 3 to commence at London Screenings 2027.

Following the CANAL+ Group’s acquisition of MultiChoice Group, STUDIOCANAL is bringing productions of significant scale to South Africa and as they wrap filming on Bill Condon’s feature film THE ROAD HOME starring Thabo Rametsi, Cynthia Erivo, Guy Pearce, Johnny Flynn & John Legend. South Africa continues to be one of the world’s leading destinations for ambitious film and television production with exceptional talent, technical expertise and production capabilities.

Currently in production for STUDIOCANAL is SHADOW HAS FALLEN, the next chapter of the studio’s globally recognised Has Fallen franchise, season 3 is shooting in South Africa with production drawing upon South Africa’s first-class cast, crews and creative talent, further showcasing the country’s capabilities on the global stage.

It is another demonstration of the STUDIOCANAL and CANAL+ group’s long-term commitment to South Africa, it’s incredible creative community and standing by those commitments made during the CANAL+ group’s acquisition of MultiChoice Group.

  • Afro-Pop superstar Mr. Eazi returns with ‘Comfort’ featuring Ghanaian singer Moliy

Afro-Pop superstar Mr. Eazi returns with ‘Comfort’ featuring Ghanaian singer Moliy

Afropop superstar Mr. Eazi is not letting off his fans, as he returns with Comfort”, a buoyant new single and video featuring Ghanaian singer Moliy of the global viral hit “Shake it To The Max”.

“Comfort” is a feel-good track that blends Mr. Eazi’s signature Banku Music sound with
Moliy’s soulful vocals, giving the song a fresh and playful feel.

Produced by Ragee, Nigerian hitmaker behind recent hits for Davido (“Unavailable”) and Ayra
Starr (“Hot Body,” “Who’s Dat Girl”), “Comfort” blends Afrobeats, dancehall and R&B with a laid-back rhythm and catchy melody, giving Mr. Eazi and Moliy room to play off each other while bringing a relaxed, flirtatious energy to a track.

Speaking on the release, Mr. Eazi shares: “This is an updated version of my signature sound. I
am making gyal dem music—sweet, easy, flattering gyal dem music. It’s about keeping things light, fun and feel-good, while still giving people that familiar Mr Eazi sound they know and love.”

Directed by Ademola Falomo, the music video brings the song’s playful energy to life through
an ‘80s-inspired visual world. Drawing inspiration from telephone hotline commercials, laser-grid graphics, shopping-mall photo studio backdrops and massive cellphones, the video creates a retro-futurist haze that blends nostalgia with a distinctly modern African pop sensibility.

“Comfort” sits firmly at the intersection of the genres that have shaped Mr Eazi’s Banku Music sound. Recorded during a stay in London this summer, the song reflects his take on where that sound is today—familiar, but with a new energy. Moliy brings her own touch to the record, adding to its easy, flirtatious mood and making it the kind of song you can simply put on and enjoy.

“Comfort” arrives during a prolific run of new music from Mr Eazi in 2026. Earlier this year, he
teamed up with U.S.-based dancehall producer Dre Skull for a run of releases including
“Lambo” featuring Vybz Kartel, “Hide Your Love” and “Remember That,” featuring dancehall
legend Cham. He also released ‘See What We’ve Done’, a collaborative album with Ghanaian music star King Promise.

With “Comfort,” Mr. Eazi continues to make music that feels true to where he is as an
artist—easy, playful and full of character. As he continues to release new music through 2026,
he stays connected to the sound and energy that have made his music resonate with fans
    around the world.

  • 7 Ways Content Piracy is Reshaping Africa’s Entertainment Industry

7 Ways Content Piracy is Reshaping Africa’s Entertainment Industry

Piracy is no longer simply a fight over copyright. It is changing how audiences consume content, how creators are funded and how platforms protect and distribute what they produce. For Africa’s growing entertainment industry, that makes piracy more than a legal or enforcement challenge. It is increasingly shaping the economics, technology and future of the creative sector. From illegal streaming and unauthorised redistribution to sophisticated piracy networks operating across borders, the threat has evolved alongside the digital entertainment economy.

Partners Against Piracy (PAP) brings together broadcasters, content creators, regulators and law enforcement to tackle the problem through enforcement, education and industry collaboration. The scale of the problem is forcing the entertainment industry to adapt in seven important ways.

Audiences are changing how they consume content: The days of copied DVDs have given way to something far more convenient: digital access on demand. Illegal streams and downloads can now sit alongside legitimate entertainment services, competing on convenience, accessibility and immediacy.

For legitimate platforms, this means the challenge is no longer simply convincing audiences that piracy is illegal. It is about making legal content accessible, compelling and easy to consume.

Piracy is influencing what gets made: Content requires investment and investment depends on the expectation of a return. When legitimate platforms and rights holders lose revenue to piracy, the impact can extend to future commissioning decisions. For African producers, that can mean fewer opportunities to finance new films, series, documentaries and other local productions.

The impact reaches far beyond the screen: A production may appear to belong to the star on screen, but it represents an entire ecosystem of writers, directors, producers, editors, technicians, stylists and production crews. When content is pirated, the financial consequences can therefore reach far beyond the broadcaster or rights holder.

Partners Against Piracy and the MultiChoice Talent Factory recently put this human cost at the centre of a campaign produced by 14 young South African filmmakers, highlighting the people working behind the screen whose livelihoods depend on a sustainable creative industry.

Platforms are becoming technology companies as much as entertainment companies: Piracy is pushing legitimate platforms to invest heavily in technology, including AI-powered detection, forensic watermarking, automated monitoring and payment disruption.

MultiChoice, for example, has described using AI-powered intelligence to identify suspicious online activity and real-time detection to combat illegal live streams, alongside watermarking to trace pirated content. The result is a new technology arms race between legitimate platforms and increasingly sophisticated piracy networks.

Live sport has become a major piracy target: Few forms of entertainment illustrate the challenge better than live sport. A film can be watched tomorrow. A football match cannot and that makes major sporting events particularly attractive to illegal operators and means rights holders increasingly need to detect and disrupt piracy while the event is happening.

For broadcasters, the stakes extend beyond the broadcast itself. Sports rights underpin subscriptions, advertising, sponsorship and investment in broadcasting infrastructure.

Enforcement is becoming a collective effort: Digital piracy rarely respects borders. The operator, technology, payment system and audience can all be in different jurisdictions. That makes collaboration between broadcasters, technology companies, governments, regulators and law enforcement increasingly important.

Partners Against Piracy was established around this principle, bringing stakeholders together to address copyright protection, consumer education and enforcement. The scale of the response is significant. MultiChoice reported more than 155 anti-piracy raids, 4,351 illegal networks shut down and 107 arrests across Africa during FY25.

The future of African storytelling is at stake: Perhaps the biggest consequence of piracy is the hardest to measure: the stories that may never get made. Africa’s entertainment industries have enormous potential to create jobs, develop talent, build businesses and take African stories to global audiences. But that requires a functioning commercial ecosystem in which value flows back to the people creating the content. The question is whether audiences will support an ecosystem capable of continuing to produce African stories, music, sport and talent or whether increasing value will flow to networks distributing that content without paying for it.

Content piracy has evolved from a copyright problem into an industry-shaping force. It is changing audience behaviour, putting pressure on commissioning decisions, challenging the economics of local production and accelerating investment in content-protection technology.
