Behind the quiet alleys and roads of the village where she lived in Kampala, a rumor swirled over the area like a plague in which Brenda Namiiro was portrayed as a person of queer behavior.
As time went on the ingredients of this allegation were finally zeroed after it was discovered that indeed Ms. Namiiro,
It is said that Ms Namiiro, a daughter to Mr. Miiro Elifazi and Mrs. Nakalema Judith Miiro, by the year 2018 was engaging in the abomination activities.
As the rumors swirled around the village, Mr. Miiro Elifazi , who was at the time full of life and bubbly, engaging in his work resume as usual, he then developed symptoms consistent with depression and trauma. He allegedly began to consume alcohol excessively, withdrew from both his personal and professional responsibilities, and was eventually admitted to a mental health facility.
It is at about this time that Ms. Brenda Namiiro is said to have severed ties with her family and went incognito.
The village was abound with an allegation that she travelled overseas to the United Kingdom and sought asylum based on her sexual orientation. Family and community members perceived this development as bringing significant shame, particularly given her position as the eldest daughter.
Mr Miiro Elifazi, later passed away on 20 January 2024, reportedly of prolonged depression according to medical reports .
Following these persistent rumors that now had also attracted the village leadership, a family meeting was convened on 25 January 2024 by Mrs Nakalema Judith Miiro, a resident of Nsimbi Ziwoome Village, Bukoto II Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala District, in collaboration with the local village committee and community members, address the matter.
Mrs Nakalema Judith Miiro, the widow of the late Mr Miiro Elifazi and mother of Ms Brenda Namiiro, together with other family members, indicated that in 2018, Mr Miiro who was a businessman in Kampala and a respected and influential figure within both the community and the Protestant church, experienced significant emotional distress after learning that his daughter was involved in a same-sex relationship.
During this meeting, members of the family resolved to publicly disown the missing Ms Brenda Namiiro on cultural, religious, and community norms that oppose homosexuality.
In a unanimous decision it was decreed that Ms. Brenda Namiiro should not inherit any family property or assets, and that she should not be accepted within the family, community, or wider clan.
It is important to note that homosexuality remains highly stigmatized in Uganda.
Under the Anti-Homosexuality Act enacted in March 2023, same-sex relationships are criminalized, with severe legal consequences.
The legislation also includes
provisions requiring individuals to report suspected acts of homosexuality and criminalizes facilitating or supporting LGBT individuals, including through housing.
Considering these circumstances, to save face from future embarrassment members of Ms Brenda Namiiro’s family and the local community agreed to bring her to book with law enforcement authorities should she be cited in accordance with the provisions of the law.
