Kampala; Airtel Uganda in partnership with the Uganda Blood Transfusion Service (UBTS)has concluded a four-day blood donation campaign at City Square, Kampala, aimed at replenishing supply that has declined in recent times because of Covid-19.
Speaking during the launch of the four-day activity, Sumin Namaganda, the Airtel Uganda Public Relations Manager said; “We understand the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on blood donations in Uganda. Thus, we shall continue working closely with the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services to play our part in mitigating the extent of blood shortages in Uganda.”
“When we started this initiative in 2014, we aimed to encourage members of the community to grow a habit of donating blood at least three times a year. I am glad to say that over the years, we have made some progress through our annual blood donation drives and we shall continue rallying Ugandans to always donate blood to save lives.”
Uganda Blood Transfusion Services appreciated Airtel Uganda for the continued support and unwavering commitment towards blood donation initiatives.
“There has been a decline in blood donations in the country as a result of the outbreak of Covid-19. This is attributed to the factthat 95% of the blood collected by UBTS is donated by students who have been under lockdown at home. The scarcity has mainly effected children, pregnant mothers, cancer, and Sickle Cell,” said Esther Awor, the Blood Donor Recruiter at Uganda Blood Transfusion Service. “I call upon all Ugandans to join this noble cause and save a life.”
Airtel Uganda is hoping to create a wave of loyal blood donors who donate up to 3 times a year.
