URA destroys fake products, warns the public against using them

Yesterday, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) destroyed a number of fake items that have been circulating in the market.

Items namely banned cosmetics, Mekako Soap and cigarettes were incinerated at a facility in Wakiso district.

They were impounded in several enforcement activities countrywide. “We urge the public to desist from smuggling due to impacts like causing unfair competition and harming lives,” URA.

Below are the details of the incinerated items.

  1. a) 33,560 kilograms of cosmetics containing hydroquinone, which is said to cause cancer. They are valued at sh621,069,750
  2. b) 38,640 kilograms of Mekako soap valued at sh15,081,500.
    They were seized due to Mercury, an ingredient, which is harmful to the skin.
  3. c) 21,740 kilograms of cigarettes valued at Shs1,549,000,000.

These are the cosmetics your girlfriend, wife, sister, mother or friend should not use. They contain harmful ingredients.

They were among the items we destroyed yesterday in Nakasajja, Wakiso district. Tell a friend.
