Ugandans on social media have dismissed what they describe as a smear campaign targeting Maj. Gen. Keith Katungi, Commander of the Fifth Infantry Division in Acholi.
The campaign, allegedly spearheaded by a section of NUP supporters, UPDF deserters led by Lt. Mabonga, and government critic Fred Lumbuye, accuses the General of diverting soldiers’ salaries and food rations.
However, many Ugandans have labelled the accusations false, baseless and self-defeating, arguing that UPDF salaries are processed at the Ministry level and paid directly to soldiers’ bank accounts like other civil servants, while feeding is managed at battalion level and below, not by the Division Commander.

Several users who claim to know Gen. Katungi praised him as a highly professional and dedicated officer, noting that both soldiers and civilians under his command hold him in high regard.
“When you see this VERY FAKE NEWS, ignore it properly. Gen. Katungi is a serviceman, one of the best of us all,” one user posted.
“This defamation campaign against the good General started with Nuwagaba, now taken up by Lumbuye and Lt. Mabonga. We know who is behind all this and it won’t succeed. The General’s record speaks for itself,” another user commented.
A third, Akiiki Henry, added: “No amount of propaganda will divert Gen. Keith Katungi. It’s unfortunate for those who don’t know him.”
