But for those who were lucky or connected enough to score an invitation to this A-list party it was an amazing night to remember. Immediately after the Ugandan premiere of the Queen of Katwe at Century Cinemax (Acacia Mall), there was a private after party that took place at the Sky Lounge Rooftop hosted by Talent Africa, Maisha Film Lab and Pemba Sports Africa.

Production

In 2012, Tim Crothers published a book for ESPN titled, The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster, which chronicled Phiona Mutesi’s life. Walt Disney Pictures optioned the rights to the book that same year.[11] Tendo Nagenda, Disney’s senior creative executive, developed the project into production.[12] Nagenda went to visit Mira Nair at her Ugandan home to tell the story of Mutesi. Nair was captivated by the story. After meeting with Mutesi, her mother Harriet, and the chess group run by Mutesi’s coach Robert Katende; Nair invited screenwriter William Wheeler to come to Kampala to conduct substantial interviews with the principal figures as a foundation for a script.

A scene from Queen of Katwe

The cast was announced in January 2015, where David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o were in negotiations to star in the film as Robert Katende and Harriet Mutesi. Nyong’o was Nair’s first choice for the role of Harriet. Nyong’o said her decision to play Harriet took “several seconds”. Oyelowo was also Nair’s first choice for the role of Robert and he quickly accepted the role for the film. However, Nair claimed that finding an actress to play the role of Phiona Mutesi was the most difficult part of making the film. The search for casting Phiona began in July 2014 and the production team have auditioned seven hundred girls by the end of the year. Queen of Katwe’s casting director found Ugandan dancer Madina Nalwanga in a community dance class and the newcomer was cast as Phiona.

Principal photography began in April 2015 and wrapped in June of that year after fifty-four days of shooting. The film was shot entirely in Katwe in Kampala, Uganda and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Release

Queen of Katwe premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2016. The film is also scheduled to be screened at the Urban World Festival on September 22. Later, the film will make its European debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9.

New Ugandan film Dream America is set to premiere on July 29th at The Hub Oasis Mall Nakumatt. Check out the details about the movie and the actors below;

‘Dream America’ is a Ugandan film that promotes peace and unity among people of different nationalities, races, cultures, tribes and religions. The film’s story focuses on three young boys who dream about going to America so as to get better jobs and live a better life. Due to their overwhelming ambition, they get assimilated into western culture. This strongly affects their relationships with the local people and foreigners in Uganda.

13517648_1145455958848997_5166170957432128578_o

‘Dream America’ is a film about the youth that are greatly inspired by the thought of travelling to America to start up new lives there, thinking that life will be much easier for them that side. For a long period of time a large percentage of the youth in Uganda have migrated to the United States of America with high expectations and therefore ending up leaving very great opportunities behind. Because of lack of guidance and ignorance, they end up not realizing what Uganda really holds in stock.

IMG-20160708-WA0013

The youth have been overshadowed by the thought of migrating to America and end up badly affected because in most cases some come back empty handed or even get deported. Other challenges come in handy like travel agencies that embezzle their money while promising to process travel documents for them.

The film ‘Dream America’ promotes patriotism so as to boost productivity and the development of Uganda as a country. The film encourages the general public to focus on maximizing the available opportunities in Uganda rather than considering migrating to other countries as the only solution to a better life.

James Bond Director Says None of Your Favorites Are Going to Be the Next 007

Speaking at the Hay Festival of Literature in Wales on Saturday, Sam Mendes confirmed what most expected: Spectre was officially his last James Bond film. The director—who was credited with injecting new life into the franchise with Skyfall—told the crowd, “It was an incredible adventure; I loved every second of it. But I think it’s time for somebody else.” And while Mendes has no hints as to who might take over directorial duties, he does have a very important message about the future of 007. When Daniel Craig departs the franchise after one more movie (if not sooner), Mendes warns that none of your favorites are likely to fill out Bond’s well-tailored tux.

Film Bond Sam Mendes
Film Bond Sam Mendes

Fans and London bookmakers alike have had a field day trying to guess the new Bond, but Mendes says they’re all off the mark. If it were up to the internet, favorites like Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston,, Tom Hardy, or, yes, Gillian Anderson would pick up the Walther PPK. But the fact is, the decision is up to producer Barbara Broccoli who inherited the power to pick the next James Bond from her father, original franchise producer, Albert Broccoli. And Barbara, Mendes says, isn’t one to play favorites.

“It’s not a democracy,” Mendes said according to The Telegraph. “It’s not The X Factor, it’s not the EU referendum, it’s not a public vote. Barbara Broccoli chooses who’s going to be the next Bond: end of story. I can guarantee whatever happens with it, it will not be what you expect. That’s what she’s been brilliant at, and that’s how it’ll survive.” Mendes says we should trust in her taste because the last time Broccoli chose and outside-the-box Bond, things worked out very well. “Public support for Daniel [Craig] was zero. It was her saying ‘that man over there is going to change the whole thing, I’m going to cast him.‘”

This might come as news to more casual Bond viewer, but Broccoli’s power over the franchise is well-known to 007 aficionados. When she sits down with an actor for lunch, Bond fans take notice. Hiddleston made headlines last December when he allegedly met with Mendes and Broccoli, and Jamie Bell, who is working Broccoli on the movie Film Stars Don’t Die, is the latest name to be linked to the franchise. The 30 year-old Bell would tie with George Lazenby as the youngest actor to take on the iconic role and, with his boyish good looks, could certainly pass for even younger. A young Bond would certainly be, as Mendes promises, unexpected. Should we all start placing our bets now?

A new movie on Uganda martyrs absolves Kabaka Mwanga on murder of his subjects

Stories have been told and retold about the world famous Uganda martyrs.

However, an upcoming movie to be premiered on May 30, at Theatre la Bonita is a story that you have not been told before. With modern cinematography, the film about the martyrs is set to write history.

The movie challenges the story you’ve been told that Kabaka Daniel Mwanga killed the converts to the new religions. The story tells you who actually did so and what was their motive.

mini-IMG_1636

The film starts in Buganda kingdom of 1870. The Baganda worshiped their gods called lubaale. It was a time for witch doctors such as Mama Fiinas of today, were celebs in their communities.

That’s when a witch doctor’s son asks his dad to quit sorcery. But of course he can’t. However, he was gracious enough to send his son to learn Islam, one of the new religions in the kingdom.

And when 97 Muslims are martyred, the witch doctor’s son freaks out of Islam. His dad gets him a job in palace with the Christian martyrs to be as a page.

As fate would have it, Christian Martyrs too are killed. The boy is saved again, but he is castrated. Later, the witch doctor’s son replaces the man who killed the martyrs. This is the story with background of Buganda history and heritage.

The fully action packed movie was directed by respected film maker Philip Luswata and produced by John Ssempebwa, the deputy Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Tourism Board.

Shot in Kalangala, one of the most beautiful parts of Uganda, the martyrs’ story is a new way of telling Uganda stories.

The red carpet premier is expected to attract high profile guests, including the Speaker of EALA Parliament Hon Dan Kidega who is to be accompanied by more than 15 East African MPs, government of Uganda officials, Mengo officials as well as the clergy.

Miss tourism queens will usher in the film fans and music will be by Frank Mbalire and Sammy Kasule in their new break away band Ziwuna.

Uganda Wildlife Authority and NBS television are the main sponsors of the movie of the year and tickets will be on sale at Theatre la Bonita from 27th May.

‘Captain America: Civil War’. The best Avengers movie by far

“Civil War” may only have Captain America’s name in the title, but (almost) all the Avengers are on board — and it could be the best Avengers movie yet. Marvel’s Latest offering to the Cinematic Universe hits Kampala on 5th May at 3D Cinema Magic.

Civil War 3
Civil War 3

African and American audiences will have to wait longer till 5th and 6th  May to see “Captain America: Civil War,” but the longest, in run time, installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already hit theaters across Europe, Asia and South America.

And like Global reviews earlier , critics around the world are raving over the third standalone “Captain America” film, with some calling it Marvel’s best by far.

Each of Marvel’s big heroes, including Captain America and Iron Man, leap from their own solo movies to join forces in “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. But now they’re back and split down the middle.

By pitting the Avengers against each other, “Civil War” provides the greatest test yet for Marvel’s band of heroes. If they stand together there’s no alien horde or robot battalion they can’t meet with a good old-fashioned sock in the jaw, but how do you punch your own doubts and fears?

‘Batman v Superman’: Who Wins the Ultimate Battle?

Opening this weekend on roughly 20 screens domestically and 30,000 worldwide, this dramatically dark and physically gigantic venture is estimated to need to haul in $1 billion at the very least to justify itself financially and pave the way for the flood of WB/DC outings already set for release over the next four years.

With significantly stronger international than domestic results likely, it may well earn its keep. But after Man of Steel three years ago, the studio had to know what it was getting with director Zack Snyder; the film may be imposing, but it’s not fun.

Batman Vs Superman premieres today at Cinema Magic Metroplex Naalya

Batman Vs Superman premieres today at Cinema Magic Metroplex Naalya

The main issue facing the writers of a superhero smackdown like this is concocting a reason why, given all the evil out there, they have to fight each other — as well as, in this case, coming up with a way to level the playing field when one hero is essentially immortal and the other is just a really buff rich guy with a costume and lots of gizmos. Screenwriters Chris Terrio (Argo) and David S. Goyer (all three of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight blockbusters) have sort of solved this by devising ways to make Superman more frequently vulnerable than he’s ever been before.

But the villain here, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, is so intensely annoying that, very early on, you wish Batman and Superman would just patch up their differences and join forces to put the squirrelly rascal out of his, and our, misery.

The story does take an epic, rangy perspective, as the long setup jumps from one far-flung locale to another to establish pockets of evil while also dramatizing Bruce Wayne’s backstory, here conceived as seeing his parents gunned down in the street after emerging from a theater showing Excalibur.

Seemingly disconnected worldwide events — Metropolis being destroyed as a huge spacecraft with claws hangs overhead, Lois Lane (Amy Adams) on assignment in Africa, criminals threatening wider destruction with a dirty bomb — are mixed in with Bruce (Ben Affleck, fitting the role just fine) brooding over his place in the world and his legacy, to which his butler Alfred (Jeremy Irons, who could use more to do) replies with perhaps the film’s best line: “Even you’ve grown too old to die young.” The solemn, grandiose atmosphere is severely disrupted by Luthor, portrayed by Eisenberg as a privileged tech guru who makes the actor’s take on Mark Zuckerberg look like the epitome of style and manners.

Loaded with vocal ticks and gushing with smarmy ripostes and threats, the character is loathsome without an ounce of insidious charm; if the legacy of the studio’s Dark Knight films might have suggested anything, it should have been in the area of great villains, but here there is just a great vacuum.

For his part, Batman is provided with plentiful backstory and psychology, but the mature character, as written, never comes into full bloom; all the same, one can look ahead with some hope to Affleck in the role in future installments. Cavill is also likeable enough but, again, hamstrung by the twisty, convoluted inventions designed to limit his abilities during long stretches.

The filmmakers would seem to have thrown up their hands at how to gracefully integrate Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) into the action, simply hurling her into the epic final battle without significant preparation at all. With just her sword and shield, she doesn’t seem meant to mix it up with these big guys right off the bat.

‘Batman v Superman’: Who Wins In Each Comic Book Showdown 16 times DC’s Dark Knight has gone up against the Man of Steel, and who won each tussle. This week, finally, audiences get to see the Dark Knight take on the Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While it’ll be the first time the two DC Entertainment superheroes have shared the big screen, the two have been teaming up for decades in comic books — and fighting for almost as long. Ahead of the two heroes slugging it out onscreen, here are some highlights of their comic book tussles, along with a running tally of which superhero won the bout.

The Feud Between Batman and Superman (1964).

Winner: N/A; the fight is broken up, and the two quickly become friends again. The Infinite Evolutions of Batman and Superman (1965)

Winner: Superman, apparently answering the “caveman vs. astronaut” meme decades early. The Galactic Gamblers (1969)

Winner: N/A, because their hearts were never in it. (But if it had come down to it, it would’ve been Batman. As much as Superman loves Jimmy, it pales before the bond between the Dynamic Duo.) How Do You Kill A Superman? (1976)

Winner: Batman, kind of…? It’s unclear; while Batman seemed to kill Superman, he actually ended up triggering a sequence of events that saved Superman’s life, which was perhaps what he’d hoped for all along…? The Dark Knight Falls (1986)

Winner: Batman, and surprisingly easily, thanks to the help of Green Arrow, some kryptonite and a mechanized suit of super-strong armor.

One Night in Gotham City (1986)

Winner: Batman; even though the two never come to outright blows, Superman is still outwitted by the Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight Strikes Again (2002)

Winner: Batman, again. Batman: Hush (2003)

Winner: N/A, because Superman manages to break Ivy’s control when he sees Lois Lane in danger. Superman: Red Son (2003)

Winner: Batman, technically; his plan to depower Superman works temporarily, but when Wonder Woman saves the Comrade of Steel — that’s actually what he’s called in this storyline — Batman commits suicide to avoid capture. Maybe we should call this one a draw? Lex Luthor: Man of Steel (2005)

Winner: Superman. The showdown isn’t even close: Superman disarms Bats of his kryptonite from a distance via super-breath without even breaking a sweat. Sacrifice (2005)

Winner: Superman, and it wasn’t even close: Batman was left in bad shape as a result of the brutal assault. Super/Bat (2008) Winner: Superman, although he couldn’t have done it alone. Justice League: Origin (2011)

Winner: Superman, although the fight didn’t really get too far before being interrupted. Cross World (2013)

Winner: Superman, despite the alternate Batman using kryptonite against him. Put it down to a mixture of confusion and the inexperience (and strength) of youth. World’s Finest No More (2014)

Winner: Superman, although Batman eventually comes back thanks to the power of advanced comic book technology and the power of negative thinking. Endgame (2015)

Winner: Batman, although he generously says in narration the nobody was the winner.
